Gareth Southgate and The England World Cup Wildcards

England fans have become disillusioned in recent tournaments with same faces and same results. Gareth Southgate had been brought in as he was seen as giving youth a chance. With his squad that will be announced this week, many fans will be keen to see if he is sticking by his youth at the World Cup.  Lots of people talk about how we need experienced England players like Gary Cahill and Joe Hart for their presence. Their success in England shirts is limited and so their experience is that of failure. I decided to have a look at three wildcards who I would take

Wildcard Selections for Gareth Southgate

Ryan Sessegnon

Sessegnon has been a revelation for Fulham for the last two years and has been widely linked with a move to one of the Premier League giants. His strength, pace, and good finishing make him a perfect option to play as a winger/wing back and left back. His versatility could be a great asset especially for Southgate who likes to switch systems.   Ryan Bertrand and Tottenham‘s Danny Rose will be chosen ahead of him despite mediocre seasons. Sessegnon has never played in Premier League and so taking the jump to international football may be too much. The fear maybe for Southgate he does not want a repeat of Theo Walcott in 2006 who Sven Goren-Eriksson took, but was just an onlooker.

Jadon Sancho

Jadon Sancho decided last summer he was that he was fed up of waiting for his chance under Pep Guardiola and that it was time to try his luck abroad. At such a young age it was such a big decision and shocked many in the football world. Now Sancho has been showing fantastic form as he gets brought in slowly by Dortmund. Dortmund fans cannot believe the ability of the young man and interested onlookers will be pushing for an England slot. Southgate should have made more of an effort ensuring Wilfred Zaha committed to playing for England and maybe Sancho will provide what the Palace winger would have provided.

Jonjo Shelvey

Jonjo Shelvey has been in very good form for the second half of the season. His long-range passing has improved and is always trying to look for the clever ball. The only other player in the England squad who can play that ball is injury-prone Arsenal man Jack Wilshere. Shelvey attitude and temperament has always been questioned and many feel he is a bit of an enigma. However, England and Southgate need someone who takes a risk in passing as we do lack imagination. He also can dictate the pace of the game which no other England player can do and Southgate must give him the opportunity.
