According to the Daily Mirror, Manchester United captain Harry Maguire’s authority is being threatened by Cristiano Ronaldo’s presence. It was said that both players were involved in a “power tussle” over the captain armband. And there are expectations that Ronaldo will take Maguire’s place as the club’s captain in the near future. However, Maguire has denied that there was a “power struggle” between him and Ronaldo. Also, Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick described the report as “false.”
Who is the Perfect Choice for the Role of Manchester United Captain?
Maguire Could Face Competition for the Captain Armband
In truth, many people have not been in agreement with the decision to make Harry Maguire captain. There have been doubts even before Ronaldo rejoined the club in the summer of 2021. The English defender joined Manchester United from Leicester City in August 2019 and was appointed club captain in January 2020. This decision did not go down well with a lot of people, including Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who felt David de Gea would have been a “better” option.
De Gea is the club’s longest-serving player, having joined from Atletico Madrid in 2011. According to Ferdinand, the pressure would be too much on Maguire, as the responsibility came too suddenly and could weigh him down. For De Gea who has been at the club much longer and has won trophies there, he would be more suited for the position.
Now, with the arrival of Ronaldo, there might be some “competition.” Even though Ronaldo has never been a permanent captain at club level, he is the captain of the Portuguese national team. Also, he is the oldest Manchester United player currently and has seen it all. Given his experience, exploits and trophy cabinet, he may just be the right choice.
Having the “perfect” captain could be a step in the right direction for Manchester United, as they look to solve their problems. It could help restore harmony among the players and ease the “dressing room” tension. Maguire or De Gea or Ronaldo, who should wear the armband?
