Julian Alvarez: Manchester City May Have Finally Found Sergio Aguero’s Replacement

Argentine striker Sergio Aguero joined Manchester City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and established himself as one of the best strikers in the Premier League. With a total of 184 goals, he is ranked 4th on the list of Premier League’s all-time top scorers, only behind Andy Cole (187), Wayne Rooney (208) and Alan Shearer (260), having played lesser games than all three of them. He is also Manchester City’s all-time top scorer with a total of 260 goals, twice as much goals as second-placed Raheem Sterling (123). Sadly, shortly after leaving Manchester City for Barcelona in 2021, Aguero was forced to retire as a result of a heart condition.

Argentine Forward Julian Alvarez Could Finally Be Sergio Aguero’s Replacement

Will Julian Alvarez Become the New Hero at the Etihad?

Manchester City have not quite been able to find a replacement for the 33-year old ever since his departure and they have played most of their games without a proper ‘Number 9,’ making use of a ‘false 9’ instead. In search of a solution, they made a move for Tottenham’s Harry Kane earlier but the deal never went through. Nevertheless, their output has not been disappointing, as they sit first on the Premier League table, having scored 55 goals in 23 games. But perhaps they will be affected in the long run if they continue that way and finally it seems they have found a replacement for Aguero in Julian Alvarez.

Alvarez, who is also Argentine, is quite similar to Aguero in aggressive play and goal scoring ability. The 22-year old was signed by Manchester City from River Plate in the January transfer window but will still remain at the latter until the summer. He scored 34 goals in 95 games for River Plate and could just establish himself as Aguero’s successor in the ‘number 9’ position. How well will Alvarez fare in the Premier League?
