Necessary Signing

United brought in 3 world class players in the summer but many have questioned if they missed a trick by not securing a midfielder. Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo are fantastic acquisitions for any club, however it is felt that United were blessed with depth in their attacking department. Throughout this season, it has become clear that United are in desperate need of a holding midfielder. A double pivot of Fred and Mctominay is not sustainable if United aim to compete with the best in Europe. Yes, there are certain games in which they have been effective. An example is the Leeds game where they both shone and won the midfield battle. However, neither of them are holding midfielders. They are good box to box players who can be effective going forward but when it comes to control, they lack the discipline required. They also tend to lose the midfield battle which is damaging as it puts the backline under immense pressure. This also makes it frustrating for the forwards as they will not see much of the ball when the ball is being conceded in the middle of the park.

Previous Interest In Neves

United were linked with Ruben Neves in the summer before they signed Cristiano Ronaldo. The fee was rumoured to be in the region of £35 million at the time. At 24, he seems to be a good option to play in that holding role. His impressive form this season has bumped up the required fee and it is rumoured to be around £50 million. It will not be easy for United as many clubs are reported to be in the mixer for Neves. It is also understood United are interested in Boubacar Kamara and they are figuring out whether to pursue him or Neves.
