Match Report: Liverpool defeat Huddersfield Town 3-0

Liverpool managed to defeat Huddersfield Town by three goals to nil in the Premier League on Saturday. The win eases the pressure on Jurgen Klopp and the players.

Jurgen Klopp planned to stick with the same defence from their 4-1 defeat last week at Wembley, but the under-fire Dejan Lovren was injured in the warm-up and was replaced by Ragnar Klavan. Up front, Daniel Sturridge replaced the injured Coutinho.

Liverpool defeat Huddersfield Town 3-0 at Anfield in the Premier League

The first half was disappointing from a Liverpool point-of-view with chances few and far between. That was until a free kick from the left-hand side taken by James Milner saw referee Kevin Friend award Liverpool a penalty. He called a foul on Huddersfield’s Tommy Smith against Roberto Firmino. Much to the surprise of many Liverpool fans, Mohamed Salah was taking the penalty. He earned the shot after his heroics with Egypt in World Cup qualification but saw his penalty saved by Lossl.

The second half saw a completely transformed Liverpool team. In the 50th minute, Klavan played a long ball which Smith headed backward only to find Sturridge. He lifted the ball over the keeper expertly much to the relief of Liverpool supporters. In the 58th minute, Jordan Henderson played a lovely ball to Firmino who squared it to Sturridge, but at the last moment, Jorgensen cleared to it a corner. The resulting corner was taken by Milner, and was headed in by Firmino to put Liverpool two nil up.

The 63rd minutes saw Firmino play a pass to Salah who turned and curled a shot only to hit the post. Liverpool continued dominating the second half. It was Georgino Wijnaldum’s turn to finish it with a third. In the 75th minute, Salah passed it to Wijnaldum in the penalty box. He delayed the shot before unleashing a rocket into the top corner for his first goal of the season, and Liverpool’s third of the afternoon.

This result eased the pressure on Klopp after Wembley disappointment. He was quoted saying “We had more chances, but it’s a big relief to be honest because the pressure was there.” He also expressed his delight by saying “A lot of good things today, especially in the second half was outstanding”

This result pushes Liverpool to sixth place, 12 points off the top of the table. Their next league game is at the Olympic Stadium to face West Ham.
