Mikel Arteta Has Failed at Arsenal And Is Losing the Fans

Mikel Arteta has failed at Arsenal and is losing the fans after his side suffered a damaging week and fell to 7th in the league. Following a 10 game inbeaten run, there was growing optimism and hope from the fans that Arsenal could defeat Manchester United and go 8 points clear of them. However, this was not meant to be the case as a brace from Cristiano Ronaldo helped United to a 3-2 victory. The loss at Goodison Park rubbed salt into the open wounds for Arsenal and fans are now beginning to question the manager one more.

Poor League finishes

The highest Arsenal have finished under Arteta is 8th. Granted his first season he took in charge mid-season and led the side to a FA Cup win, that can be excused. However, their performances in the league last season were terrible and finishing 8th for a club with the stature and history of Arsenal, is wholly unacceptable. He also suffered a significant loss in the semi-final of the Europa League where Villarreal and Unai Emery knocked them out over two legs. However, the board decided to persist with Arteta after he failed to provide them European football for this campaign, the first this in 25 years Arsenal are competing in Europe.

Disastrous Start

After spending in excess of £100 million pounds in the summer, there was an expectation from Arsenal fans that they could challenge for a top four spot. However, these hopes were almost shattered after a horrible start for Arsenal in the league, with 3 losses in the first 3 games. Fans were extremely disappointed with the start and called for the manager to be sacked. Again, the board persisted with him and Arsenal then went on a 10 game unbeaten run which they should be given credit for. These fixtures were those games that Arsenal were expected to win, beating the likes of Norwich and Newcastle. However, they also played Leicester away from home and managed to pick up the three points and they also won the North London Derby at the Emirates in this period. Aaron Ramsdale has had a huge influence on the team by producing match-winning performances. Tavares and Tomiyasu have also been inducted into the team seem to be good technical, astute players.

Arsenal Needed to Make a Statement

The game at Old Trafford was a chance for this Arsenal side to make a statement and impose themselves into a serious top 4 race. A win would have taken Arsenal 8 points clear of United and would have sent a real statement to the other clubs who are chasing that top four spot. It was the experienced players that let Arsenal down on the night. The likes of Thomas Partey and Pierre Emerick Aubameyang did not produce extra ordinary performances which was required form them in game like this. Arsenal are relatively a young side, therefore there is greater responsibility on the experienced players to lead by example but they were both poor at Old Trafford. The lacklustre performance was followed by a very underwhelming display at Goodison Park where Everton beat Arsenal 201. Manchester United have now made-up ground on Arsenal and are one point clear. The momentum and confidence following the 10 game unbeaten run has been shattered. Arteta will be given another opportunity to turn things around, but this consistent level of inconsistency shows why he has failed at Arsenal.
