Steven Gerrard Expects Reinforcements in January

‘Lot of Work Still To Do’

After the win at the weekend against Crystal Palace, Gerrard stated he has a ‘lot of work still to do’ despite his encouraging start. Villa have the third worst defensive record in the league and that us something Gerrard and his coaching staff will want to change desperately. His side kept a clean sheet in his first game in charge while they conceded against Palace which led to a nervy end to proceedings for both Gerrard and the supporters. In terms of selection, Gerrard has not really made wholesale changes and the back four is essentially the same one Dean Smith would pick. The inclusion of 36 year old Ashley Young has been a smart pick from Gerrard on the left flank as his experience and defensive work rate helps the team.

Defender is the ‘Priority’

According to the Sunday Mirror, Gerrard has made signing a defender for Villa a ‘priority’ and it is understood the club are actively looking at targets. Joe Gomez has been identified as a potential target in a loan move in January. The outstanding relationship Gerrard has with his former club Liverpool means that there is a strong possibility this deal could come into fruition.  Gomez is now seen as a fourth choice centre back for Jurgen Klopp as they brought in Ibrahima Konate in the summer. Gomez was one of the many central defenders to be stuck on the sidelines last season through injury. This deal could be good for him and give him the game time he needs. Gomez will also have aspirations of travelling to Qatar with England next year, regular playing time is a must for him if he wants to achieve that objective.
