Mohammed Salah and Luis Suarez – Why Salah Stands Above Suarez at Liverpool

There is debate as to who of has made the bigger impact for Liverpool between Mohammed Salah and Luis Suarez. Former Liverpool star Suarez played for the Reds between 2011 to 2014. The Uruguayan scored a lot of goals during his three-year spell, helping the team to the League Cup in 2012.

Salah, on the other hand, has been incredible for Liverpool since arriving at Anfield in 2017. The Egyptian has broken records during his time with the Reds and is one of the club’s all-time top scorers which is why Salah stands above Suarez in Liverpool’s history.

Why Salah Stands Above Suarez in Liverpool History

Rio Ferdinand Puts Salah Above Suarez

As reported by Anfield’s Watch, Rio Ferdinand while speaking to BT Sport chose the Egyptian over Suarez. Ferdinand said;

 “I’d take Mo Salah, what he’s done the last four seasons, the top goal scorer in each of them, top goal-scorer again for Liverpool this season, I just think he’s immense.”

Both have made undeniably valuable contributions to Liverpool with Suarez arriving first.

Suarez’s Liverpool Career

Luis Suarez arrived at Liverpool from Ajax in  January 2011 having impressed with the Dutch outfit. He made an instant impact as he scored on his debut against Stoke City in the Premier League.

Restricted to fixtures in the League as Ajax were in the Europa, Suarez scored four times from 13 appearances. In his second season, he was very instrumental as Liverpool won the 2012 League Cup against Cardiff City.

In the 2013/14 premier league season, which was the Uruguayan’s best season, Suarez scored a record-equalling 31 goals. However, Liverpool and Suarez failed to win the League title after what was an incredible title race. 

In total, Suarez scored 82 goals in 133 games for Liverpool in his three-year spell with the club before leaving for Barcelona

Salah’s Liverpool Career So Far

Salah, meanwhile, has been incredible for Liverpool in his full four seasons so far. The Egyptian International arrived at Anfield from Roma after a failed spell in the Premier League with Chelsea. However, his time with Liverpool has been the complete opposite. 

Salah also made an instant impact on Liverpool. Scoring a hat-trick on his Premier League debut. He also broke a league record for most goals in a season with 32 goals, surpassing Suarez’s record of 31. 

In silverware, Salah helped Liverpool end a 30-year wait for a Premier League title in the 2019/20 campaign. The Egyptian was also a key part of Liverpool’s Champions League triumph the following season.

This has made former Manchester United star Ferdinand choose Salah over Suarez in terms of Impact made for Liverpool. He said to BT Sport;

 “The icing on the cake for me – over the consistency – [is] he’s been part of a team that wins big trophies and he’s been integral in that. He’s won the Premier League, he’s won the Champions League.”

The Verdict

Both Suarez and Salah made a huge impact in their Liverpool careers and the latter is still pulling the strings. Suarez, during his time, scored 82 goals and provided 47 assists in 133 games for the Reds. Salah, meanwhile, has scored 137 goals and provided 51 assists in 214 so far. The big trophy wins might just be the thing that separates the two players. Also, Salah is still currently playing for Liverpool and his form this season has been tremendous. This means that the Egyptian is also capable of reaching greater feats than the Uruguayan.
