MLS Players to Watch: 5 Names Who Can Help the USMNT in the CONCACAF Gold Cup

The United States Men’s National Team announced the 60-man roster that will attend the CONCACAF Gold Cup Camp. Some big international names were left off the list, which means a few MLS stars have a chance to make their name known to manager Mauricio Pochettino.

What makes this window so important for these players is that the World Cup is just one summer away. Due to hosting, there is a limited amount of games, thanks the U.S. being automatically qualified with their privilege to host.

Luca De Le Torre, San Diego FC

Luca De Le Torre is the most the most experienced on the National team on this list with 22 appearances and five assists. He has played in the Nations league and the Gold cup over the past few season.

With many questions in the midfield in terms of health and the fact that Gio Reyna is not on the roster. This makes De Le Torre a trusted option at mid field going into the Gold Cup.

De Le Torre works well with Tyler Adams and Weston McKennie, who may be younger or the same age as De Le Torre but are mainstays on the roster. With Yunus Musah being unused by AC Milan, this could open up a key sub or a starter spot in the midfield.

There is no telling who Pochettino will go to in a close game, all signs point to one of the top midfielders in the MLS who has made a name for himself on the national team and has international experience.

Brian White, Vancouver Whitecaps

This is a name that MLS fans should be thrilled to see on the camp invite list. This goes to show that recent performance in the MLS can earn an invite to a major camp. Brian White has been spectacular for his club this year, he is top three in goals so far this year, netting in eight in MLS play.

White has only appeared in three games for the National team in his career, where he scored just one goal.

His limited experience and being behind one of the deepest position groups in the camp may make it difficult for him to be listed as a reserve, let alone play in a game. Though he may not get a chance to display what he can do to the world, he will have a shot to impress Pochettino in camp and hopefully get another chance during a friendly in the fall.

Patrick Agyemang, Charlotte FC

The dual-national Patrick Agyemang has only ever made two appearances, in which he has scored two goals. Agyemang is a 24-year-old forward who has tremendous potential who has yet to show it on a consistent bases.

He appeared in 31 games in MLS play last year, scoring 10 goals and three assists. He is capable of doing more, all things considered it was a strong season for his first full year called up from the MLS Next Pro.

He played with the first team in the Nations league where he scored a critical goal early in that game thanks to an assist from our next player on the list.

Despite not having impressive stats over a long period, Agyemang proved he can score with the national team and can make an impact when his number is called. Hopefully, the young forward will get another moment under the bright lights in the Gold Cup.

Diego Luna, Real Salt Lake

Diego Luna is a name that USMNT fans have been calling for for well over a year, their voices were heard during the Nations league when the young midfielder got a shot to play big minutes against Canada.

Luna might not be in the running to start in the Gold Cup, he is a name that can be called on as a super sub. his high energy of play has helped the young midfielder contribute to a struggling Real Salt Lake being the one bright spot on their season so far.

He has three appearances and just one assist to show for his efforts, Luna was not selected to the Olympic team, which upset USMNT as he seemed like a clear option to start in the midfield.

Luna may have a chance to prove he belongs on this team heading into the fall friendlies with a good Gold Cup this summer.

Sebastion Berhalter, Vancouver Whitecaps

Sebastion Berhalter may not have the big-time stats to show how good he has been, but this young midfielder has been a game-changer for the Vancouver Whitecaps. He controls the ball so well and makes what seems to be every right decision on the pitch.

He has contributed to key goals against Inter Miami in the Leagues Cup and has been one of the main reasons Brian White has had so many key chances in the box.

Don’t let the name Berhalter skew what the average USMNT fan thinks about him. He can be a great addition to this squad in his first time with the national team.

He could be a potential reserve who can make a game-changing impact in the final third for a team that has struggled to finish goals over the past few years.
