The curtain rises on a new chapter of the Women’s Super League. The 2025/26 WSL season officially returns on the weekend of 5-7 September 2025, marking the league’s 15th edition since its inception in 2010 and the seventh under full-time professional status.
And as always, Chelsea are right in the thick of it.
Opening Night Spotlight
The reigning champions kick off their title defence with a mouth-watering Friday night showdown against Manchester City at Stamford Bridge on September 5, with kick-off scheduled for 7:30pm live on Sky Sports. It’s the kind of heavyweight clash that sets the tone, not just for Chelsea’s ambitions but for the league itself.
The season will include four WSL matches at Stamford Bridge, a winter break over the festive period, and a final matchday on the weekend of 15-17 May 2026, where Chelsea will once again host Manchester United.
Big Moves, Bigger Statements
In early 2025, the Blues smashed the world transfer record by signing USWNT captain Naomi Girma from San Diego Wave for around $1.1 million – a defining move for both the club and the women’s game. They also welcomed Kiera Walsh from Barcelona.
This summer, manager Sonia Bompastor has also welcomed Ellie Carpenter, Becky Spencer, and Livia Peng, further solidifying depth across the pitch.
Building on Youth and Stability
Internally, the Blues continue to bet on continuity and youth. Johanna Rytting Kaneryd has committed to the club until 2027. Niamh Charles, fresh from a triumphant Euros with England, remains one of the most reliable left-backs in the league.
Not to mention, England hero Hannah Hampton is poised to have another successful campaign at the West London club.
Injury-wise, Chelsea will be missing Sam Kerr, Mia Fishel, and potentially Lauren James, who is still a doubt after picking up an injury in the Euros. Meanwhile, Lucy Bronze played through a stress fracture to win Euro 2025.

Broadcast Boost and Fan Experience
All of this is unfolding under a new five-year broadcast deal that will see the majority of WSL matches aired live on Sky Sports and the BBC, with Sunday noon fixtures becoming a weekly staple.
The league is also expanding its matchday experience trials, including in-stadium alcohol sales at seven clubs, Chelsea included.
High Expectations and Higher Stakes
So, what can Chelsea fans expect this season? The pressure of defending a treble, the excitement of generational signings, and the growing reality of fierce competition from both Arsenal and City.
But with Naomi Girma anchoring the back line, Erin Cuthbert buzzing in midfield, and the young fire of Aggie Beever-Jones, there’s every reason to believe the Blues can stay ahead of the pack.
