Manchester City have had a bit of a shaky start to their 2025/26 Premier League campaign as they suffered a 2-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in their first home game of the campaign.
That is why Pep Guardiola is aiming to strengthen the goalkeeper area of his squad before the end of the 2025 summer transfer window, and Manchester City look to be closing in on the signing of Italian goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris-Saint Germain.
How Much Would Manchester City Need To Pay For Gianluigi Donnarumma’s Signing From PSG?
Gianluigi Donnarumma has ended up losing his spot in the PSG starting lineup despite starring for them in their successful 2024/25 season, in which the French club won the European Treble!
As a result, the Ligue 1 side are now ready to sell the goalkeeper, and Manchester City are aiming to get a deal done before the transfer window closes.
It’s now being reported that the Premier League giants are progressing in their negotiations with PSG to finalise a deal to sign Donnarumma.
The Italian goalkeeper has reportedly accepted the offer from Manchester City and is ready to join them for a new chapter in his career.
It’s claimed that PSG have lowered their £43.1 million initial transfer fee demands to sell Donnarumma and are now ready to accept a fee of around £30 million to green-light the Italian goalkeeper’s departure.
However, it’s also being claimed that Manchester City’s chances of finalising a move for Donnarumma will depend on the future of Ederson at the club. The Brazilian goalkeeper is being strongly linked to a possible move to Galatasaray, and only once that is finalised can the Cityzens properly move forward with the acquisition of Donnarumma.
Manchester City have already strengthened their goalkeeper area this summer with the signing of James Trafford from Burnley, but the Englishman’s shaky performance in the defeat to Spurs has raised questions on his capability in the role.

Can Gianluigi Donnarumma Prove to Be an Upgrade Over Manchester City’s Current Goalkeeper Options?
Gianluigi Donnarumma has earned his reputation as one of the best goalkeepers in the world by remaining at the top of the European football scene for the last decade.
The Italian goalkeeper played a key role in helping PSG win the UEFA Champions League, Ligue 1 and French FA Cup titles last season, keeping 17 clean sheets in 47 games across all competitions in the 2024-25 season for his side.
That included six clean sheets in 15 Champions League games, and he was hailed as “sensational” by Luis Enrique after a particularly amazing performance against Aston Villa in the knockout stages.
Donnarumma is a highly experienced goalkeeper who has made over 400 appearances in his domestic career and has 74 international caps with Italy, having helped them win the Euro 2020 championship as well.
The Italian goalkeeper was able to prove his quality in between the goal for PSG last season, managing a 67.8% save percentage and 17.4% clean sheet percentage in Ligue 1.
In comparison, Ederson managed a 69.2% save percentage and a 40% clean sheet percentage in the 2024/25 Premier League, while James Trafford managed a 65.7% save percentage and a 7.1% clean sheet percentage.
However, the Italian goalkeeper towers over both goalkeepers in terms of experience and being able to guide his team to important victories.
Donnarumma’s heroics in the Champions League knockout stages in the 2024/25 season helped him stand out from other goalkeepers, as he excels in pressure situations because of his excellent shot-stopping ability and uses his physical prowess to cover a lot of distance in his goal.
Donnarumma can prove to be a vital signing for Manchester City and someone who adds more reliability to their defensive set-up and potentially grabs them more clean sheets going forward.
