Is Pedri the Best Midfielder in the World? Spain Star Strengthens His Claim

Is Pedri the best midfielder in the world? Pedri’s brilliance stood out once again in the match against Turkiye as Spain mauled them 6-0 in a World Cup qualifier.

The 22-year-old Barcelona midfielder scored a brace in the match. He has already been setting Spanish football on fire with his performance for Barcelona in the last few years.

Now, he is making his presence felt in international football as well. The youngster is one of the most influential midfielders in world football at the moment.

Pedri has scored five goals in 36 international matches for La Roja so far. He is almost certain to make many more international appearances if he manages to stay injury-free.

Is Pedri the Best Midfielder in the World Right Now?

Pedri has played in more than 200 matches for Barca already, scoring 27 goals for them. Like most Barcelona midfielders, his impact on the game cannot simply be gauged by goals and assists, as he plays a key role in building up moves with his neat, short passes in the middle third.

With a similar player like Frenkie De Jong beside him in the middle third, Pedri is almost always instrumental in making Barcelona a formidable force in the midfield. It also helps that Barca have a fantastic attack comprising of Lamine Yamal, Raphinha and Robert Lewandowski, who keep scoring heaps of goals.

Not surprisingly, Pedri has already won a couple of La Liga titles with Barcelona.

Pedri has Rodri, Martin Zubimendi and his club teammate Gavi in company for the Spanish national team and remains a crucial component in the midfield of the European champions.

As of now, only Jude Bellingham, Federico Valverde, Bruno Fernandes and Florian Wirtz should be in the discussion to decide the best central attacking midfielder in the world aside from Pedri. Each of those players brings a distinct skill set to the table.

Bellingham is quite a physical specimen and is a well-rounded midfielder. He can play box-to-box and has the ability to score goals, too. Valverde is extremely versatile and can play as a right-back, too.

However, neither Bellingham nor Valverde has the passing skills that can be compared with Pedri’s, especially if we are talking of short, incisive passes.

Other Names to Consider

Bruno Fernandes is the senior-most in that list and is an elite playmaker. He is also quite high up the pecking order in terms of creating chances. However, he does not have a top-quality midfielder alongside him in his club team to bond with him and destroy opposition defences. Manchester United’s recent track record proves that.

Wirtz is one of the most expensive players in world football and has proved his worth in the Bundesliga. He has great skills as a No. 10, but, unless he proves his utility in the Premier League, he cannot really be called the best midfielder in the world.

With the slight decline of Kevin De Bruyne and his exit from Manchester City, do many now think Pedri the best midfielder in the world? Especially given his consistent brilliance for both club and country.

The Spaniard still has a long career in front of him, which should see him win many more honours.
