Liverpool’s form showed no signs of improvement in the Liverpool vs Crystal Palace fourth round of the EFL Cup, which ended with a 3-0 win for the visitors on Wednesday, October 29.
The Reds have now lost six consecutive matches across all domestic competitions. It is simply unthinkable and unpardonable, even considering the fact that they made changes to their playing XI and fielded a second-string team against Crystal Palace.
There were still experienced players like Andy Robertson, Wataru Endo, Federico Chiesa and Alexis Mac Allister in Liverpool’s starting XI, which means that their fielding a new team cannot be fully used as an excuse for their big defeat. Milos Kerkez, the much-maligned new signing, was there, too.
Liverpool’s Form Is Simply Inexplicably Bad
The Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Carabao Cup game was just the latest in a string of poor results. Liverpool’s form has been so bad in recent weeks, that it has now become difficult to think that they had a brilliant transfer window in the summer on paper, at least. Losing six domestic matches on the trot is bad even for a team in the lower tier, let alone the English champions.
Liverpool’s form reminds one of Manchester City’s in the middle of the 2024/25 Premier League season when Rodri suffered an injury. The Cityzens went out of the Premier League title race because of their poor form that started immediately after Rodri was ruled out for the remainder of the season because of an injury.
Arne Slot does not have the excuse of a key player suffering an injury either, as of now at least. Most of his big-ticket signings have simply failed to step up so far, with Hugo Ekitike being the only exception with six goals to his credit this season already.
The Reds do not seemingly have players who can make a difference coming off the bench either. The likes of the late Diogo Jota and Luis Diaz used to do it regularly until the end of last season. Someone like Darwin Nunez was profligate in front of the goal, but still managed to score 40 goals for the Reds before leaving the club.

Can They Come Back From Another Liverpool vs Crystal Palace Loss?
They have too much quality to keep underperforming for a long time. Mohamed Salah, Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak probably cannot go through an entire season without firing.
However, Slot will hope that a reform will start happening as soon as possible. As of now, that trio has a meagre five goals in 34 combined appearances for the Reds.
The supporters all around the world have short memories these days. Even the fact that Slot won the Premier League title in his debut season as a manager in England will not keep him immune to criticism. In fact, he is already facing the music, as the Anfield faithful have started to give him a piece of their minds, and the Liverpool vs Crystal Palace loss will not quiet the noise.
Liverpool will face Aston Villa next in the Premier League before taking on Real Madrid and Manchester City in the UEFA Champions League and Premier League, respectively.
Those are big matches, which should give Slot’s men no breathing space.
Bowing out of the EFL Cup is not a big deal, but failing to do well in the Champions League and Premier League is likely to affect Slot’s future at Liverpool. It remains to be seen if the Dutchman can reverse the tide.
