Premier League Relegation: Are Leeds and Burnley Both in Trouble After Positive Starts?

The rollercoaster ride with the impending doom of Premier League relegation at the end of the season rumbles on, as sides near the bottom of the table battle it out for survival.

Since the start of the 2025/26 Premier League season, Nottingham Forest, Wolves, Aston Villa and West Ham have all had periods where they have occupied those spots, but with Leeds and Burnley now in the relegation zone, does this indicate that the newly promoted sides are in trouble?

Premier League Relegation: Leeds United’s Chances

Casting a 5-0 defeat against Arsenal and a 1-0 defeat against Fulham aside, Leeds United picked up a healthy tally of eight points in their first six Premier League matches, and were all clear of the Premier League relegation zone in the early stages of the season.

However, at the current time of writing, Leeds have lost five of their last six matches, and their fortunes appear to have changed in comparison to their first matches. Following a 2-1 loss against Aston Villa, Leeds’ next match is against Manchester City, as well as Chelsea, Liverpool and Sunderland, all to play in December.

With the prospect of tough matches on the horizon, manager Daniel Farke has to be seriously considering adapting his approach with Leeds United to halt their demise. The Elland Road faithful have frequently experienced relegation, as has Farke himself with Norwich. Thus, the manager must be doing his utmost to ensure events do not repeat themselves.

Premier League Relegation: Burnley’s Chances

Scott Parker, like Daniel Farke, has also experienced Premier League relegation as manager of Fulham. Although Burnley sit one point behind Leeds in the table, they have won two matches out of their previous six, which is better than that of Leeds, and have more favourable fixtures on the horizon.

In the month of December, the Clarets face the likes of Fulham and Everton, with two matches against Newcastle respectively. Although some of those sides present a tough test, they also present an opportunity for the Clarets to add some points to their current points total.

However, when taking all of this into account, it is notable that the Clarets have a lack of Premier League experience on their side, as well as positions of weakness. Burnley have a distinct lack of striking options, opting to play Zian Flemming upfront for the bulk of the season, and a lack of quality on the wings, as depicted by Jaidon Anthony.

West Ham and Nottingham Forest’s Form

West Ham and Nottingham Forest’s form indicates that they may be moving clear of trouble, and their quality in comparison to Leeds and Burnley is evident.

West Ham have recently picked up a draw against Bournemouth and a win against Newcastle, with striker Callum Wilson hitting some form under the guidance of Nuno Espirito Santo. The striker scored two against Bournemouth and one in the recent victory against Burnley.

Nottingham Forest have endured a tumultuous start to the campaign, yet they have found stability under Sean Dyche, characterised by a famous 3-0 win at Anfield in their most recent encounter. Although this may be indicative of Liverpool’s demise, Forest performed well all over the pitch and had to be at their best to score three goals.

Furthermore, Aston Villa have completely turned their form around, sitting fourth in the Premier League table, after failing to score for an extended period at the start of the season.

Conclusion

Although they looked positive at the start of the season, the chances of Leeds United and Burnley staying in the Premier League appear to be fading.

The managers of both sides will be reluctant to have further relegation on their CVs. However, it appears that both may have to make drastic changes to avoid such an outcome.
