Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Are Less Than the Sum of Their Parts

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Hotspur lost 2-1 to Fulham in their last Premier League match at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Saturday, November 29. The defeat meant that Spurs are now in 12th position in the Premier League table with 18 points from 13 matches.

Spurs have now lost five of their 13 league matches so far. They endured a big defeat against arch-rivals Arsenal before the Tottenham vs Fulham game, which was yet another reversal for Thomas Frank.

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham Need To Get Their Act Together

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham must do something to improve their form. After having a really successful summer transfer window, they should be doing better, even considering the fact that they are without James Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski because of injuries.

Frank must decide upon the formation his team should play with.

If it is a 4-2-3-1 formation, then his team’s attack should be built around Xavi Simons as the No. 10 in Maddison’s absence. Simons is a new signing and has not done much to justify it so far. Simons is yet to score a goal and has two assists in 17 matches for Tottenham so far. This is definitely not the ideal beginning he has had for the club.

Also with the 4-2-3-1 formation, playing Pape Matar Sarr and Joao Palhinha in a double-pivot will somewhat curb their freedom as players. This will force them to stay back, leaving it mainly to Simons, Mohammed Kudus and Brennan Johnson to create moves.

Hence, if Thomas Frank’s Tottenham opt to play with a 4-3-3 formation, it will allow one of Matar Sarr and Palhinha to adopt the role of a No. 8. It will also ease the pressure on Simons, thereby increasing the fluidity in the midfield.

Tottenham Have Quality Goal-Scorers Up Front

Thomas Frank’s Tottenham have Randal Kolo Muani and Dominic Solanke in their squad, both of whom are capable No. 9s. However, Solanke has been injured for the most part, and Kolo Muani has scored only two goals in 11 matches so far.

It can be argued whether the supply of passes to Kolo Muani, who will turn 27 soon, has been proper. Thus, Tottenham have quality players all over the pitch, but are failing to fire as a collective unit, meaning that they are less than the sum of their parts. Frank will have to sort out the issues in his midfield soon to take care of that.

In addition to that, there is some extra pressure on the Dane as manager of a genuine top-six contender. He has managed Brentford in the past, but the pressure there cannot be compared to the one at Tottenham Hotspur.

Frank will still be given some time to get his act together, but the pressure is already mounting. Languishing in the bottom half of the Premier League table will not be acceptable at all and Frank will know that very well.

Hence, he will have to do something to turn the tide within the next few matches. Tottenham will take on Brentford and Nottingham Forest next, with a match against Slavia Praha in the Champions League sandwiched between the two. They will then face Liverpool on December 20, which is a tough one.

It remains to be seen whether Frank can consolidate his team’s position by the time they face Liverpool.
