Pressure is mounting on Chelsea head coach Liam Rosenior after another damaging defeat, with doubts growing over whether he will remain in charge beyond the weekend.
On Tuesday, April 21, the Blues were beaten heavily – three goals to nil – in the Brighton vs Chelsea fixture, in a result that has intensified scrutiny on both performances and results during a difficult run in the second half of the season.
The result saw Chelsea drop to seventh in the Premier League table, with the hope of qualifying for European football hanging by a very thin thread.
Brighton vs Chelsea Defeat Deepens Concerns
Chelsea’s latest loss leaves them struggling for consistency at a crucial stage of the campaign. What was once expected to be a push for the top four has turned into a battle to avoid slipping into the bottom half of the Premier League table.
Speaking on Sky Sports, reporter Kaveh Solhekol suggested Rosenior’s position is now under serious threat.
“It’s touch and go whether he remains as the Chelsea head coach,” Solhekol said.
The journalist pointed to comments made by Rosenior after the match, where the coach indicated he would be selecting the team for the upcoming FA Cup semi-final. While that may suggest short-term continuity, it does not guarantee long-term security.
“But I’m pretty sure this morning [Wednesday, April 22], at Chelsea’s training ground, the senior executives there will be discussing what happened last night and what they need to do next,” Solhekol said.
Poor Run of Form
Chelsea’s struggles are not limited to one result. The defeat to Brighton is part of a wider run of poor performances stretching back several months.
Since the start of February, the Blues have managed just two league wins, a return that falls well below expectations for a club of their stature.
Rosenior himself admitted after the match that he was shocked by the display and described it as “unacceptable.” However, critics argue that such performances have become a recurring issue rather than a one-off setback.
At a time when clubs are usually building momentum for the final stretch of the season, Chelsea appear to be moving in the opposite direction.
European Ambitions Fading
The club’s decline has also raised questions about their European ambitions. Earlier in the campaign, qualification for the UEFA Champions League was seen as a minimum target.
Now, even a place in the UEFA Europa Conference League is far from guaranteed.
Chelsea won that competition last season, but returning to it would represent a step backwards given the club’s financial investment and expectations.
Solhekol suggested that, despite public indications the club would stand by Rosenior even without Champions League football, the current situation may force a rethink.
“The way the club is set up, and the finances at the club mean that they have to be in the Champions League,” he said.

Crucial FA Cup Clash Ahead
Attention now turns to the FA Cup semi-final against Leeds United, which could prove decisive for Rosenior’s future.
The Chelsea head coach hinted he would make changes, stressing the need to select players who will “represent the club in the proper way.”
That comment underlines concerns not only about results but also about attitude and commitment within the squad.
A strong performance at Wembley could ease some of the pressure, but another disappointing display may leave the club with little choice but to act.
Uncertain Future
For now, Rosenior remains in charge, but the situation is clearly fragile, especially following the 3-0 loss in the Brighton vs Chelsea clash. Chelsea’s hierarchy must weigh up whether to persist with their current project or make a change before the season slips further away.
With results deteriorating and expectations unmet, the coming days could prove pivotal in shaping the club’s immediate future.
What once seemed a season of promise is now at risk of ending in disappointment, and the pressure on the Chelsea manager shows no sign of easing.
