Ahead of the 2026 World Cup, Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup prospects are something that people will keep a close eye on, as they have qualified for just their second FIFA World Cup tournament ever as an independent nation, with the first one having been in 2014.
However, the question is, can they progress beyond the group stage this time? Here we assess Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup prospects.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup Prospects: The Easiest Possible Group But Will It Be Enough?
Bosnia and Herzegovina have been drawn into Group B, which has been called by some not only the easiest section of this World Cup, but perhaps in the tournament’s history. It also includes co-hosts Canada, alongside Switzerland and Qatar.
Even so, there certainly are plenty of potential banana skins ready to impede Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup prospects in this group.
The Dragons have the misfortune of being the Canadians’ first opponents in Toronto on July 12. They then meet Switzerland in Los Angeles on June 18, before travelling to Seattle to face Qatar on June 24.
Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup Prospects: A Tournament-Defining Opening Match
A host country’s first game at the World Cup is the one that has that nation buzzing the most, with hopes and expectations. The Bosnians have the task of crashing that party, which, while it won’t be easy, will give them the key to progression if they succeed.
If they lose to Canada, the game against the clear group heavyweights, Switzerland, will be all the more pressuring on them. If Bosnia are to have any hope of advancing from the section, however, they must beat Qatar in their last group game.
The hosts of the 2022 World Cup are the clear underdogs in Group B, despite having won the two most recent AFC Asian Cups. However, both of the tournaments took place on home soil, and the second of the two triumphs happened under dubious circumstances.
Beating the Qataris might even be enough to help Bosnia advance on its own, but they wouldn’t want to rely on that.
Even so, again, the momentum from the Canada match, either positive or negative, will likely go a long way toward deciding Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup prospects.
Sure, they could beat Canada, go on to lose the next two matches and exit the tournament in the group stage that way, but that is unlikely, for footballing reasons, and human psychology doesn’t work that way either.
So, the Canada result will be crucial on many levels and will decide the Bosnian team’s entire outlook on the rest of the tournament.

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup Prospects: The Problems
The Dragons are dealing with some major injury problems, even with the World Cup over a month away.
Hull City defender Amir Hadžiahmetović has been ruled out already, which is a big blow for coach Sergej Barbarez’s side as it is.
Speaking of injuries, the team’s talismanic captain, Edin Džeko, had injured his shoulder during his national team’s big qualifying play-off final win against Italy and hasn’t featured for his club side Schalke 04 since.
Granted, the former Manchester City striker should be back in time for the World Cup, but it is unclear what condition the now 40-year-old Džeko will be in by then.
The Dragons rely on him far too much as well. His performance could also make or break Bosnia and Herzegovina’s World Cup prospects, but if they can advance from their group, a deep run might be possible.
