When Liverpool faced Crystal Palace in the Premier League yesterday, Freddie Woodman’s Premier League debut was a topic talked about by most, if not all, of the Reds, as Arne Slot’s men secured a 3-1 win over the Eagles.

Goals from Alexander Isak, Andy Robertson and a stoppage-time sealer from Florian Wirtz handed Liverpool the win as they continued their charge towards securing UEFA Champions League football next season.

With that being said, none of the above players stole the headlines; however, it was Liverpool’s goalkeeper Freddie Woodman’s Premier League debut that had fans in awe of the third-choice Reds shot-stopper.

With both Alisson and Giorgi Mamardashvili out injured, Woodman stepped in between the sticks for Liverpool to mark his full Premier League debut for the Reds.

The ex-England youth international has floated in and around the Premier League for most of his career, but has never been able to establish himself as a top-flight player.

However, with Liverpool’s first and second-choice goalkeepers out injured, Freddie Woodman’s Premier League debut highlights a glimmer of hope for the Reds’ third-choice shot-stopper.

The 29-year-old came off the bench to replace the injured Mamardashvili in the second half against Everton on Sunday, April 19, as the Reds’ number 28 made one save and Liverpool went on to win 2-1 in the Merseyside Derby.

Freddie Woodman’s Premier League debut came in the home clash against Crystal Palace yesterday afternoon, as Arne Slot confirmed  Mamardashvili would not feature, and it was slightly too soon for Alisson.

The former Preston North End shot-stopper had a fantastic display in between the sticks for Liverpool as he made five saves and looked a commanding figure in goal.

The only thing that dampened Freddie Woodman’s Premier League debut for the Reds from being perfect was that he was unable to keep a clean sheet as Daniel Munoz found the back of the net for the Eagles, which ended up being only a consolation goal.

Since his move to the current Premier League champions this summer, he featured in one game before his two recent Premier League outings, as he started in Liverpool’s 3-0 loss to Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup back in October.

As a third-choice goalkeeper, not many people would have thought that he would get any game time this season, which is usually the case for any third-choice shot-stopper.

However, for someone like Woodman, who has been a solid Championship shot-stopper for the whole of his career, a Premier League debut for a big team like Liverpool is something that dreams are made of.

Woodman thought that something like this would never be possible, but with Alisson and Mamardashvili injured, the 29-year-old took the chance with both hands.

Freddie Woodman’s Premier League Debut: From An Under-20 World Cup Winner To A Second-Tier Shot-Stopper

The 29-year-old has always been a solid goalkeeper, as the ex-England youth international made caps in all of the youth age groups from under-16 to under-21.

However, he was never given the chance in the top flight, as he went on to make only four appearances for Newcastle United in the Premier League, and then made the permanent switch to Preston after several loan spells.

As a Championship shot-stopper, he has been a reliable goalkeeper, making over 200 appearances in the second-tier during his time with Swansea City and Preston and keeping 73 clean sheets.

Woodman has shown so many qualities that should have made him a Premier League number one goalkeeper for so many seasons in the Championship.

However, when Liverpool signed him in the summer, it looked like a supreme Championship talent is going to be wasted as a third-choice shot-stopper whilst he should be in his prime years.

With that being said, Woodman has gained a lot of valuable experience whilst at Liverpool over the last couple of months, and whilst he has not been on the pitch to gain match experience, being a third-choice goalkeeper is something that he’s not experienced in a long time.

Freddie Woodman’s Premier League Debut: Life As A Third-Choice Goalkeeper

After being a first-choice goalkeeper for the last couple of seasons in the Championship, many people would have thought that Freddie Woodman’s Premier League debut for a team like Liverpool would be impossible.

However, whilst it would have seemed unlikely with him being a third-choice goalkeeper for the Reds, injuries have enabled him to step up and fill the void in goal.

Woodman spoke about the joy of playing at Anfield and facing his boyhood club as a Liverpool player:

“It was an unbelievable moment for me,” Woodman said.

“I didn’t think I would play at Anfield in a Premier League game when I joined this club.

“I’m a massive [Crystal Palace] fan now, still, but I wanted to try and help the team as much as I can. I’ve trained for this.

“When you’re playing behind top players, it makes my job so much easier.”

Freddie Woodman’s Premier League debut for Liverpool may not have ended with him getting a clean sheet, but he has certainly won the fans over with his displays against Everton and Crystal Palace.
