The Rodri transfer from Manchester City to Barcelona is currently at a standstill. The 30-year-old defensive midfielder might have to stay at Manchester City if the move to Barcelona does not go through after a summer of speculation. If the Rodri transfer happens, though, it will considerably weaken Manchester City next season.

The Rodri transfer to Barcelona will strengthen the Catalans immensely, as it will make their midfield one of the best in the world. As of now though, it seems that Barcelona are not interested in paying more than £‎60 million for the World Cup Golden Ball winner.

Rodri Transfer to Barcelona: How the Midfielder is Going to Boost Them

There is no No.6 in the world today who is equally adept at passing the ball and foiling the counter-attacks of the opposition like Rodri. Rodri has played in 298 matches for the Cityzens and has won four Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League title for them.

He also won the Ballon d’Or two seasons ago and thus became the first defensive midfielder since Lothar Matthaus to win the award. By winning the 2026 World Cup with Spain as well as the tournament’s Golden Ball, Rodri has now won everything that is worth winning in football.

His impact on Manchester City has been there for everyone to see. In the 2024/25 season, the Cityzens fell behind in the title race for the Premier League once Rodri got injured mid-season and Liverpool won the title. Rodri managed to play in only eight matches that season.

In the 2025/26 season as well, Rodri was not fully fit throughout and played in 33 matches. Had he been fully fit and played around 40+ matches, Manchester City probably would have won the title.

By going to Barcelona, Rodri will make their midfield even stronger. Barca already have Pedri, Frenkie De Jong, Gavi, Dani Olmo and Fermin Lopez, and one is simply scared to think what it would look like if Rodri joins the mix.

There is no better footballer to play in the double pivot than Rodri at the moment. His combination with Pedri will be too good, as it usually is for the Spanish football team.

Rodri knows very well when to join the attack by venturing forward with the ball and how to dictate the pace of the game. He is very strong in the air and is a clean tackler as well.

It seems a bit surprising that Barca are not willing to spend £60‎ million on a world-class player like Rodri, but parted with £‎80 million for Anthony Gordon, with due respect to the latter.

Manchester City spent more than £‎100 million to acquire Elliot Anderson’s services, who is a very good player but definitely not as good as Rodri.

It now remains to be seen whether the Rodri transfer to Barcelona takes place ultimately. If it does, Arsenal supporters will be very happy, as it will make their club the hot favourites to win the league title.

Manchester City supporters will hope that a Rodri transfer does not happen in the current transfer window, at least.
