The competition for the role of the Spain No.10 is on at the moment. As of now, Dani Olmo seems to have got the upper hand in that regard, but Fermin Lopez is not far behind either.

Thus, La Roja have a couple of top-class options for the Spain No.10 position. However, Luis de la Fuente’s job is to choose the player who is best suited to the role for his team.

Spain No.10: Fermin Lopez Brings More Attacking Qualities to the Team

Fermin Lopez is in his fifth season for Barcelona. He has played in 143 matches for Barca and scored 36 goals. Fermin also has 26 assists since the start of the 2024/25 season for the Catalan giants. However, he has played in only nine matches for the Spain national team so far.

The 23-year-old has had a few injury issues lately, but has exceptional technical abilities. He has played as the Spain No.10 in two recent matches in the Nations League and should be getting more chances to shine for his country in the future.

On the other hand, Dani Olmo, Fermin’s competitor for the Spain No.10 role, has played in 60 matches for Spain and has scored 12 goals. However, Olmo’s stats for Barcelona are less flattering than Fermin’s.

Olmo is in his third season at Barcelona and has scored 20 goals in 96 matches for them. Since the start of the 2024-25 season, Olmo has registered 17 assists for Barca, which means that his numbers are well short of Fermin’s.

However, Olmo does more defensive work than Fermin and plays more as a No.8 than a No.10. Hence, playing Olmo is a better ploy to keep the flow of the passes going for Spain. If Pedri plays in the double pivot, then Spain already have a creative influence in the middle third. In that case, they might not need Fermin Lopez as the Spain No.10 upfront.

However, if Rodri and Fabian Ruiz play in the double pivot, Spain probably will need a more creative player than Olmo as the No. 10. Olmo can combine with the wingers and centre-forward, but Fermin is more of an explosive attacking player. Olmo can exchange short passes really well, but Fermin’s ability to dribble is better.

Extra Time Notes

Fermin is a more exciting player than Olmo and might be a better No.10 as well. However, that does not mean that he should get into the Spanish playing XI automatically, because there are other factors to consider as well, as mentioned above.

Fermin is younger than Olmo, who is 28 now. Hence, it can be assumed that Fermin will get more chances to play for Spain in the future and will be in the game for longer.

However, if he fits the role of the Spain No. 10 better, he should get more opportunities to play, as his explosive skills should be better suited to break the low block. It now remains to be seen whether Fermin gets more chances to play as the Spain No.10 moving forward.
