Fabrizio Romano tweeted ”here we go” concerning the imminent transfer of Andre Onana to Manchester United. Inter and Manchester United are closing in on the agreement before Onana will travel for medical tests and contract signings. The Red Devils want the goalkeeper to obtain a work visa so he can join them on the pre-season tour of the United States. Onana will be beneficial for Manchester United for so many reasons.
David De Gea had flaws
The Spaniard was not very good at saving penalties which hindered the team significantly when they went to penalty shootouts.
For instance, in the Europa League final against Villarreal, De Gea failed to saved any of Villarreal’s 10 penalties diving the wrong way on several occasions. He also was not the best at playing out from the back. In the FA Cup final against Manchester City, he lost the ball 12 times trying to play out from the back which frustrated Ten Hag. This is also a problem as in the modern game goalkeepers such as Ederson and Alisson are exceptional with their feet.
Andre Onana has worked under ten Heg before
The Cameroonian goalkeeper played for Ajax under the tutelage of the Dutchman. This means he knows what the goalkeeper’s strengths and weaknesses are. Onana will also be aware of how he wants his team to play football.
The goalkeeper isn’t the only player who has worked under Ten Hag as others include Lisandro Martinez and Anthony. Erik ten Hag opts for players he knows well because he knows that those players already know what to expect from him.
He played a crucial part in Inter Milan’s Champions League run
Andre Onana kept clean sheets in seven of Inter Milan’s 11 games in their route to the Champions League final. The former Ajax goalkeeper was in top form while La Beneamata thumped Barcelona (during the group stage), FC Porto and Benfica in the knockout stage in both fixtures. However, he saved the best performance in the tournament for the final where he made many crucial saves to keep Inter in the contest.
Andre Onana can play out from the back
Onana is exceptional with his feet which is ideal for ten Hag as he wants to implement his playing out from the back style of football. A goalkeeper that can play out from the back will also bring confidence from the defenders on his team as they will be able to trust him. Manchester United playing out from the back also makes them less predictable as when De Gea was in goal they would usually go for the long ball. This is risky as it gives possession to the other team and puts Man United under pressure.
