Ange Postecoglou Sacking Justified, but Shows How Ruthless Sports Can Be

Nottingham Forest’s Ange Postecoglou sacking happened after a defeat in the Nottingham Forest vs Chelsea clash at the City Ground on Saturday, October 18. The Blues won the match 3-0 to inflict a fourth defeat for Nottingham Forest under Postecoglou in only six matches.

Nottingham Forest are in 18th position in the league table with five points after eight matches. That is just a very bad position to be in, given the kind of talent they have at their disposal.

Nuno Espirito Santo helped the team finish seventh last season, and his sacking after a difference in opinion with the club owner has come back to haunt Nottingham Forest.

Ange Postecoglou Sacking Was Inevitable After a String of Bad Performances

Ange Postecoglou sacking was only a matter of time, as Nottingham Forest kept losing one match after another. This seemed a continuation of the horror show the Australian manager came up in the Premier League with a squad as good as Tottenham Hotspur’s last season.

There was euphoria at Tottenham after winning the Europa League, but that did not make up for the 22 defeats they suffered in the Premier League in 38 matches in the entire season. Tottenham finished 17th, and Postecoglou was subsequently sacked despite winning a European trophy with them.

The Australian lasted 39 days at Nottingham Forest, which is the shortest stint a manager has had at any club in the Premier League.

He has now overseen 11 wins and 26 defeats in the last 44 Premier League matches he has been in charge. That is a pretty deplorable record for a manager used to coaching top-tier teams.

Big Ange has won silverware in both Australian and Scottish football in the past, and the Europa League success was definitely a high for him. However, performing badly in the domestic league, which is the bread and butter, is hardly excusable.

Postecoglou’s teams usually play an attractive brand of football, but do not often manage to tread along the fine line between being enterprising and being defensively inept. Playing with a high defensive line, conceding goals from set-pieces etc., are usually the qualities associated with his teams.

Postecoglou Might Find Another Job Soon, but Winning Will Still Be Necessary

Despite the Ange Postecoglou sacking, it seems pretty unthinkable that a top manager like Postecoglou will be out of a job for long, but wherever he goes next, he will need to win matches. That is non-negotiable in football or any sport, for that matter.

That also goes on to show the lack of job security that is there in football management. No manager is immune to that, especially those privileged enough to spend freely in the transfer market. Not everyone is a Pep Guardiola or a Carlo Ancelotti, who have to decide to leave a club themselves for the latter to part with them.

Still, it is the essence of competitive professional sport that makes it all the more enticing. Postecoglou will have to accept that and move on. He might as well think of altering or adjusting his approach or philosophy in the future.
