Another Tottenham Loss Exposes Their Current Plight

Another Tottenham loss, this time to Atletico Madrid in the UEFA Champions League, continued their woeful run. Igor Tudor has now experienced defeat in all four matches he has overseen at Spurs.

Atletico won the match 5-2 in Madrid in the first leg of the round of 16 of the Champions League on Tuesday, March 10. Julian Alvarez scored a brace for the hosts to ensure a thumping win. The big Tottenham Hotspur loss means that they will face a Herculean task in the second leg to prevail in the tie.

Tottenham Loss Continues Their Miserable Run

Tottenham are without a win in their last 11 Premier League matches and are currently fighting a relegation battle. The Spurs have been better in the Champions League until Tuesday, but their Premier League form seems to have caught up with them ultimately.

Tottenham have conceded 46 goals in 29 Premier League matches so far, which is the fifth-highest in the league.

Both of their regular centre-backs, Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, have been found wanting in terms of disciplinary issues and seemed to have lacked motivation at times. It will not surprise many if Van de Ven leaves the club at the end of the season, as might a lot of others should Tottenham get relegated.

The Tottenham loss on Tuesday saw them concede four goals in the first half itself. They started with a 3-4-3 formation with Antonin Kinsky in goal in place of Guglielmo Vicario. However, Kinsky was substituted after only 17 minutes, as he had let in two goals through big mistakes.

The situation is so bad at Tottenham that even a defeat seems to be a blessing in disguise. The Tottenham loss to Atletico means that they are out of the Champions League already for all practical purposes.

That should allow Tottenham more time to resurrect their Premier League campaign and manage to somehow overcome the looming threat of relegation. Going down to the Championship will be miserable for a club as big as Spurs, and the North Londoners will have to avert it anyhow.

Is Igor Tudor the Right Man To Lead the Charge?

One thing is for sure: there are not too many right candidates to take up the Tottenham job at the moment. Tudor’s record at the club has been very bad so far, but sacking him might not serve the purpose either.

Still, if Tottenham keep on losing, Tudor might find it difficult to save his interim job. The Spurs will take on Liverpool in the Premier League in their next match this weekend. They will then face Nottingham Forest in a direct face-off between two teams facing potential relegation.

Getting points out of those two matches remains absolutely critical for Spurs, and many of their supporters might not even dare to think of winning in the second leg of the Champions League tie against Atletico in between.

The Tottenham loss in the Champions League only exposed their plight once again. As a team, they will have to try to find a way out of their troubles. However, it is easier said than done, and Tudor should find the job to be considerably difficult, given the current situation.
