Atalanta has rediscovered their form after a rocky period around this time a month ago. They are 5-2-1 in their last eight games, including that stunning 3-0 win at Liverpool in the quarterfinals. They moved up to fifth in the Serie A this past weekend, following their 2-1 win at relegated Salernitana.
The Bergamaschi are in their second European semifinal, 36 years on from their only previous matches at this stage. That came in the 1987/88 UEFA Cup Winners Cup, where they fell to eventual winners KV Mechelen. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side is within touching distance of a maiden continental final, and could win two trophies in the space of a week, since they are also in the Coppa Italia showpiece.
Marseille has had a rather inconsistent 2023/24 season, with their ninth place in Ligue 1 with three full rounds to play being an accurate reflection of that. Yet, OM is in their fourth UEFA Cup/Europa League semifinal, six years removed from their last one. They have never lost at this round in this competition, going on to lose the final on all three previous occasions.
Unlike Atalanta, Marseille did not have a game this weekend, allowing them to fully focus on the task at hand. Their game against fellow European hopefuls, Reims, was moved to next week to aid them in making a fourth UEL final.

While we can expect another tight game between these two, Atalanta will be favourite to progress here. After all, they have only lost two home games in Europa League history. That does include their last home match in the competition against Liverpool. Moreover, given Marseille’s tame away record in Europe – they only won once on their travels in the competition this term – the pendulum swings firmly in the Italians’ favour.
