Bayern Munich defeated RB Leipzig 2-0 on Wednesday, February 11, in the quarterfinals of the German DFB Cup. Here, we bring you three major talking points after the Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig game.
Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig: The Six-Year Drought in the Cup Is Two Wins Away From Being Over
The main talking point of Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig is the win that takes the Munich team into the semifinals of the German DFB Cup.
The Bavarians succeeded in ending six years of not being in the semifinals of the German Cup. Now they are only two wins away from taking the trophy home. Six years without it have given the lone domestic cup competition added value from the point of view of die Roten.
During the past six years, the Bavarians have often exited the competition in its early rounds. That is not something that the club, which prides itself on having built a winning culture, wanted to continue.
That is why there was such noticeable relief amongst everyone associated with the club after the final whistle went. The game was a lot closer than the two Bundesliga encounters between the sides. Leipzig really played like a top-four team this time, but Bayern were determined to win.
The goals by Harry Kane and Luis Diaz were the product of that determination, as was the disciplined defending that the team showed throughout the Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig game.
A Four- Plus Goal-Performance Is Not Always Necessary for a Spectacular Win
On Wednesday, Bayern showed they could play for each other and sportingly fight for each other. That kind of team spirit and unity is something that coach Vincent Kompany has brought into the side.
But that defensive performance we saw against Leipzig was still unique for them. Usually, attacking spectacle and the defensive mishaps that come with it are what we have seen from them for years, irrespective of who the coach was.
But this defensive discipline can be spectacular in a way. A team with such good chemistry and the desire to collectively defend its goal also has its appeal.
Bayern will not turn into such a team, to be sure. But having these characteristics is helpful in knockout football, particularly with the business end of the Champions League approaching soon.

Bayern Attack Not Always Having It Their Way
Bayern Munich vs RB Leipzig also showed the opposite, at the other end. Namely, that attacking spectacle is not always going to be possible. That too is something that they will see in the continental Round of 16 and hopefully beyond.
Ultimately, the game was decided by two creative attacking moments that were three minutes apart. It was a good lesson in patience, which they will need in the next few weeks and months of knockout matches.
The whole performance was very satisfying from a defensive standpoint, especially after having conceded twice in each of the two consecutive Bundesliga games prior to the Hoffenheim game last weekend.
In the Champions League against Arsenal, Bayern’s attack was also stifled for much of that second half; the problem there was that defensively, they could not hold up.
They did so against Leipzig; the question is, will it work out against higher-level opposition next time?
