Borussia Dortmund will look to take win their home leg in front of the Black and Yellow Army for the first time this season, having faced the first legs of both the round of 16 and the quarterfinals away from home.
BVB arrives at the game in a difficult situation, as last Saturday they suffered a 4-1 defeat against RB Leipzig. That loss included with a team that included most of their starting eleven. Currently, in a comfortable fifth place in the Bundesliga, they are set to qualify for the UCL next season due to Bundesliga’s seasonal coefficient, almost surely awarding a fifth spot in the Champions League next term.
Paris St. Germain was crowned Ligue 1 champions on Sunday due to AS Monaco’s defeat to Lyon. Luis Enrique played a hybrid side on Saturday in their 3-3 draw against Le Havre to manage minutes prior to the big game. Kylian Mbappé came off the bench in the second half to play a total of 45 minutes.
PSG was on the verge of elimination in the group stage, yet now find themselves just one step away from the final. Luis Enrique does not shy away from the expectations and publicly targets a historical treble for the French side with the UCL as the main focus.
Both teams have recent memories of each other having played in the group stage this season. The opening game of the group saw PSG beat the German side by 2-0 at Parc des Princes, before closing the group stage with a 1-1 draw in Germany, a result that provided passage to the round of 16 for both sides. Borussia Dortmund finished at the top of the group but PSG had the better results in the head-to-head, the only thing that matters this time around.
Excluding this season’s encounters, they have only met once before in the competition, the round of 16 of the 2019/20 season. The first leg was a 2-1 win for BVB at home with Erling Haaland scoring both goals. However, the French side turned the tie around in Paris with a 2-0 win with Neymar leading the team.
