Can Bryan Mbeumo Signing Help Fix Manchester United Goal-Scoring Rot?

Manchester United had a highly forgettable 2024/25 season in which they ended up finishing in 15th place in the Premier League and also lost the UEFA Europa League final to Tottenham Hotspur.

They only scored 44 goals in the league last season, having the fifth-worst goal record for all 20 teams.

That is why the Red Devils have pushed to secure the signing of Matheus Cunha to bolster their frontline. They are now seemingly pushing for the signing of Brentford forward Bryan Mbeumo, who can significantly improve their goalscoring issues if the deal is done.

How Did Bryan Mbeumo Perform In the 2024/25 Season To Attract Manchester United Interest?

There is a strong reason why Ruben Amorim’s side are now strongly pursuing the signing of the Cameroonian forward.

It’s being reported that the Red Devils recently made a second bid worth around £60 million for the 25-year-old’s signing, and it’s also being claimed that they are relaxed about his transfer pursuit despite apparent competition from Tottenham Hotspur for the Brentford man.

Bryan Mbeumo is deservedly earning major transfer interest from top Premier League clubs, and that is because of the role he played in helping Brentford secure a 10th-place finish, ahead of the likes of Manchester United and Spurs!

The Cameroonian forward had a brilliant personal campaign in the Premier League, scoring 20 goals and providing seven assists in the league itself.

In fact, the only players to have scored more goals than him in the league in the 2024-25 season were Mohamed Salah, Alexander Isak and Erling Haaland!

The Cameroonian forward was a harrowing player for Brentford’s opponents because of his clever movement through the right-wing role.

He scored vital goals in wins over Newcastle United, Brighton & Hove Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Ipswich Town to help the Bees rack up the necessary points tally to get a top-half finish in the league.

How Will Bryan Mbeumo help Manchester United?

If they are able to get this deal over the line, Ruben Amorim’s side will get a significant boost to their attacking potential.

Last season, the Red Devils were extremely wasteful in front of goal and their players missed a total of 60 major goal-scoring chances in the league, with Alejandro Garnacho leading the tally with 14 big goal chances missed.

That is why United were only limited to 44 goals in the Premier League, the second-worst in the top 15 in the league standings.

Mbeumo, on the other hand, had an impressive goal conversion rate of 24%, with 18 of his 20 league goals coming from inside the box.

When it comes to comparing the Cameroonian’s numbers with the Man United forwards, it’s a bit of a cakewalk for the Brentford man.

Rasmus Hojlund scored four goals in the 2024/25 Premier League, while Joshua Zirkzee only managed three goals.

Mbeumo almost scored three times the number of goals the two Red Devils’ forwards managed combined together in the league last season.

Not just that, but the Cameroonian forward dominates the Manchester United forwards in other key attacking aspects too.

Last season, Mbeumo averaged 2.08 shot attempts per game, more than Hojlund (1.65 shots per game) and Zirkzee (2 shots per game).

He had more progressive carries (3.43 per 90) and made more progressive passes (3.73 per 90) than the Danish forward (1.209 progressive carries and 0.96 progressive passes per 90) and Zirkzee (1.02 progressive carries and 2.98 passes per 90).

What makes Bryan Mbeumo such an explosive forward is his tendency to score more goals than anticipated, too.

He had an xG (expected goals) of 12.3 in the 2024/25 Premier League, outperforming that to score 20 goals – more than seven goals that he was statistically expected to.

The 25-year-old has averaged 16 goals in the Premier League over the last three seasons and is a proven threat in the league, which means he is guaranteed to fire up Manchester United’s front line and add that lethal spark they missed last season.
