César Azpilicueta has officially bid farewell to Atlético Madrid, with his contract ending on June 30 following two seasons of leadership and versatility in the heart of their defence.
The 35-year-old Navarre native leaves after 39 appearances and a memorable goal against Espanyol.
A beloved figure in the dressing room and a captain in spirit, Azpilicueta’s exit comes amid a broader summer reshuffle: Atlético also confirm the departures of Axel Witsel and Reinildo, moves that offer both wage relief and squad refreshment.
He wrote:
“After two seasons, the time has come to say goodbye. Although my time at Atlético has been short, it has been full of commitment, effort, and learning.
“From the first day, I felt welcomed as one of the team. I’ve been fortunate to share my daily life with an incredible group of people, both on and off the pitch.
“Thank you to all of them for making me feel part of this family from the very start. I also want to thank everyone who works at the club and the fans for their constant support. I’ve done my best to defend this badge with courage and heart at all times.
“Though I wish I could have helped in winning titles, I thank you for allowing me to live this experience. I wish you all the best in what lies ahead. Come on Atletico de Madrid!”

What Next for César Azpilicueta?
Despite his influence, Atlético chose not to extend his contract, in line with earlier reports from January that flagged his exit as a certainty.
The timing follows Atlético’s early exit from the Club World Cup, removing any extension options tied to that tournament.
Looking ahead, Spanish media suggest Celta de Vigo are strongly interested in recruiting him. They aim to blend their youthful squad with seasoned pros and are drawn to Azpilicueta’s experience and versatility.
Now a free agent, Azpilicueta will weigh his options, with Celta’s recruitment plan a potential fit alongside long-time friend Marcos Alonso.
He has also been linked to Juventus.
The former Chelsea captain has ruled out a move back to the Premier League, out of respect for his former side.
From La Liga, Marseille, Chelsea and now Atlético, Azpilicueta leaves behind a legacy of leadership and adaptability.
The next chapter begins soon, and wherever it is, the defender will bring that same relentlessness and class.
