Chelsea have spent $444 million under Todd Boehly. They have taken the January transfer window to a new level in relation to spending. In the January window they have spent around £188 million on new players. The players they signed are Mudryk, Felix, Badiashile, Madueke, Andrey Santos and Datro Fofana. Their single biggest transfer outlay has been the £88 million capture of Mykhailo Mudryk. This article looks at whether they needed to spend so much in the January window.
Chelsea have not done well this season
Chelsea are currently 10th in the league having played 20 games. They have won eight, drawn five and lost seven in their 20 games. A bad first half of the season resulted in Thomas Tuchel being sacked. Poor results have also meant that Chelsea is 10 points of the top four. As a result of this, new players are needed to give the club more options. Chelsea having more options will strengthen there squad. Improving their squad could bring a U-turn in results.
Some signings are a risk
Joao Felix is a risk as his output for Atletico Madrid has not been good. In the 14 games he played in the league this season he has scored four goals and got tjree assists. Last season he played 24 league games and got eight goals and had four assists. These stats are concerning as Chelsea have struggled when it comes to attacking players. Murdyk went to Chelsea for an expensive fee. This puts him under pressure to perform in contrast to other signings. It is also a risk as he has not played in any of Europe’s top 5 leagues. However, in the Champions League he did get three goals and two assists in six games. Madueke is a risk due to the fact he is very injury prone. Last season he missed 25 games due to four separate muscular injuries.
Ageing players need replacing
Chelsea has players who are ageing in the squad. The club also has players who are surplus to requirements. Ageing players include Thiago Silva, Koulibaly, Jorginho, Azplicueta and Kante. Players who need replacing include Ziyech, Pulisic and Havertz. This means that Chelsea will need to sign players to replace those who are going to leave in the summer. Chelsea should have got rid of the ageing players and the players who are surplus to requirements before signing players.
How can they fit all the players in
Chelsea have signed six players this January window. This is a problem as it will be hard to keep all the players happy. If players are unhappy this can result in squad unrest. If their is squad unrest it can result in poor performances. There would not be a issue if they did not sign such a high volume of players. Chelsea will find it hard to rotate as they are out of both the EFL Cup and FA Cup. It would also be a big risk to rotate 9-10 players in the UEFA Champions League.
Chelsea signing so many players is not necessary as it will be hard to keep them happy. It is also a risk as some of them will struggle to adapt to the Premier League.
