Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Jorrel Hato from Ajax. The 19-year-old Dutch left‑back (who also slots into central defence) has reportedly agreed personal terms with the Blues, and club-to-club negotiations have entered their final stages.
Why Jorrel Hato Makes Sense
Hato, already capped at senior level for the Netherlands, offers versatility and pedigree. He’s made over 100 appearances for Ajax and was once the youngest captain in the club’s history.
With Marc Cucurella currently the only senior left-back in the squad, Chelsea see Hato as ideal cover – or even competition – for the Spaniard.
The transfer is expected to cost in the region of €43-45 million, down from Ajax’s initial €55-60m valuation.
Reports suggest Chelsea held firm at around €40m, and Ajax have gradually softened, partly due to the club’s financial constraints and Hato’s clear preference for a move.
Reportedly, a deal around €40 million is close to being agreed, and that Hato has already signed off on a long-term contract – potentially for eight years, tying him to Stamford Bridge until 2033.

What It Means for Chelsea
This would mark another strategic coup in a window defined by calculated investment and ruthless negotiation.
Manager Enzo Maresca, fresh off bringing in players like Joao Pedro, Jamie Gittens, and Liam Delap, sees Hato as the next logical reinforcement in a squad pushing into the Champions League and riding the momentum of a massive windfall from winning the Club World Cup.
Hato’s versatility is key. He can play as a progressive left-back or step into the centre if needed.
That flexibility was critical for the Blues, particularly given defensive uncertainties around Wesley Fofana, Axel Disasi, Badiashile and others.
A Sign of Transfer Market Confidence
If finalised, the Hato signing would bring Chelsea’s summer spending close to £250-260 million. Significant, but balanced by a string of high-value sales.
This summer alone, Chelsea have already offloaded Kepa Arrizabalaga, Djordje Petrovic, Noni Madueke and Joao Felix cashing close to £160 million. Also on the market to be sold or Raheem Sterling, Carney Chukwuemeka, Lesely Uguchukwu, Armando Broja, Renato Veiga and Axel Disasi.
It underlines a clear philosophy. Buy smart, sell smart, and build a squad with depth and versatility.
In Hato, Chelsea aren’t just investing in youth – they’re investing in adaptability. He’s no panic buy, but a long-term option who’s already proven himself at senior level.
