Is Evangelos Marinakis Too Involved in Proceedings With Nottingham Forest?

For football fans worldwide, they certainly have varying opinions regarding their ownership and how they manage their football clubs’ affairs.

However, one owner that stands out in comparison to the many others is Nottingham Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis, who appears to have a deep, yet somewhat controversial role at Nottingham Forest. But what has he done to cause controversy, and does he go too far?

Evangelos Marinakis’ Controversy

The first, and most prominent action of the Nottingham Forest owner relates to when he stormed the pitch to have an animated discussion with Nuno Espirito Santo following a 2-2 draw with Leicester in May.

Such actions divide opinion, as, although the nature of the conversation was not fully disclosed, it was suggestive of some disapproval from the owner in light of his team’s performances.

Although disapproval is a natural feeling to have as an owner, many believe it would have been more professional to undertake internal discussions in relation to such a topic.

Furthermore, it may be argued that there should be a level of acceptance for a run of bad form. Nuno Espirito Santo has recently brought success and progress back to the City Ground in comparison to when they were in the Championship, although such progress may have bumps in the road.

Tensions Over Transfers and Management

Another action relating to Mr Marinakis that has caused controversy relates to the potential transfer of Morgan Gibbs-White to Tottenham Hotspur. Although Spurs appeared to have triggered the release clause of the player, Forest responded furiously, claiming it was an illegal approach.

Furthermore, reports are starting to come out that Evangelos Marinakis is considering removing Nuno Espirito Santo from his current role after the Portuguese manager relayed a sense of dissatisfaction at his squad’s preparation ahead of their Premier League opener against Brentford.

In the press conference ahead of the match, Nuno stated: “We are very far – very, very far – from where we should be…we are all very worried that in two or three days we are playing for the Premier League, the most demanding competition in the world.”

Since Nuno Espirito Santo’s comments, Nottingham Forest have been very active in the transfer market, adding the likes of Omari Hutchinson and Douglas Luiz to their squad. However, there does appear to be tensions behind the scenes following those comments.

In previous years, the likes of Scott Parker have relayed a sense of dismay at progress in the transfer window at various clubs, which has previously led to managerial departures. However, given the nature of these comments, some may argue that a potential sacking may be extreme.

As a manager, it is normal to want to have your final squad ready well ahead of the season opener, which would allow for the squad to gel before the first match. It is also normal to recognise where the squad may need to improve and add numbers, especially due to the European matches Forest will have to play this season.

Many will argue that is the extent of manager Nuno Espirito Santo’s comments, and that there may not be malice involved, as Forest have been very active and supportive in the transfer market in recent years.

Furthermore, to remove Nuno Espirito Santo from his position may be argued to be a rash decision, especially considering the level of success that he has brought to Forest in comparison to other managers who have been at the helm at the City Ground.

What Lies Ahead for Nottingham Forest?

As Nottingham Forest have had increased levels of success, many more fans across England have noticed the bold and intimidating nature of Evangelos Marinakis.

Some of his decisions may be deemed ‘rash’ and ‘bold.’ However, some may argue that the strict nature of the man may ensure he only allows success at his football club and nothing below the standards.

However, many people will be intrigued to see what other decisions he makes over the course of this season.
