FC Porto’s Polish Wall: Jan Bednarek And Jakub Kiwior Transforming The Dragons Into The Best Defence In Europe

FC Porto’s Polish wall have put Liga Portugal on notice, as the Portuguese top flight usually does not get the recognition it deserves.

In the official UEFA rankings, Portugal places sixth, over 11 points behind France in fifth, and does not usually get mentioned in the top-five league debate, as the five nations in front have superior power on the European stage.

However, with that being said, Liga Portugal have two of the best defences in Europe, and FC Porto’s Polish wall has certainly put the Portuguese top-flight on the radar once again.

The Liga Portugal title battle is extremely tight, with league-leading FC Porto, second-placed Sporting CP, and third-placed S.L. Benfica separated by four points, and it has largely been a story of stellar defences.

All of Portugal’s big three sides have conceded fewer than 20 goals domestically, a feat that no team in Europe’s top-five leagues has managed.

One of these sides has only conceded 10 goals domestically, and it has to be down to FC Porto’s Polish wall.

The Dragons look to chase down their first Liga Portugal title since 2022, and their Polish defensive duo could help them massively in achieving this goal.

FC Porto’s Polish Wall: Summer Transfers From England To Portugal

Jan Bednarek made a permanent move from Premier League-relegated Southampton, whilst Jakub Kiwior joined on loan from Premier League title-chasing Arsenal.

The former, a regular in Southampton’s Premier League relegation season, signed as a direct replacement for Pepe, who retired at the end of the 2023/24 season.

The latter, a bit-part player in Arsenal’s title-chasing side, joined the Dragons on loan in search of regular first-team minutes.

Whilst Bednarek joined at the start of the summer transfer window, Kiwior signed at the end of the window.

The more experienced Polish defender contributed to three clean sheets before his younger compatriot joined the club and created FC Porto’s Polish wall.

Liga Portugal Title Hunt And Challenging In Europe

The Polish duo have been fantastic as a partnership and have contributed to FC Porto challenging for their first Liga Portugal title since 2022 and progressing deep in the UEFA Europa League.

Whilst a minor injury for Kiwior saw him sidelined for two games in February, FC Porto’s Polish wall have played together a combined total of 17 times in league football.

Their partnership has been important in the Dragons’ fantastic season so far, as they have only lost four times in all competitions this term; however, Bednarek and Kiwior played together in only one of these losses, the UEFA Europa League phase defeat to Nottingham Forest back in October.

FC Porto’s Polish wall have contributed to 13 clean sheets in all competitions during their partnership in Portugal and are part of the best defence in Europe.

With the Dragons also adding the ever-experienced Thiago Silva to their ranks in January, FC Porto’s Polish wall has remained untouchable, and manager Francesco Farioli has trusted the two Poles to get the job done.

In the UEFA Europa League Round of 16 first leg, FC Porto’s manager entrusted Thiago Silva to pair alongside Bednarek as the Dragons went on to pick up a narrow 2-1 win over VfB Stuttgart.

In their chase for domestic and European glory, the Polish defensive partnership is ever-important, as their combination has helped FC Porto claim clean sheets and important victories.

Interest In Kiwior And His Future

Whilst the 26-year-old has impressed in Portugal, a return to Italy is looking like a possibility in the summer.

The defender made his big-money move from Italy as he joined Arsenal from Spezia in 2023, as his talent was picked up by the Gunners.

His minutes for the North London side were very sporadic as Mikel Arteta would play him for a spell of games before dropping him back to the bench.

Kiwior, in the end, grew frustrated by the situation and wanted guaranteed first-team minutes, which he has been given by manager Farioli in FC Porto’s Polish wall.

The Liga Portugal title battle has also helped Kiwior return back onto the radar of big European clubs, as still only 26, he has many years to come at the top level.

With FC Porto having the chance of purchasing Kiwior permanently at the end of the loan spell in the summer, they have the opportunity of cashing in immediately on one of their key Polish cogs or keeping him to continue FC Porto’s Polish wall partnership.

Poland’s Defenders In Top Form Ahead Of 2026 World Cup Qualifying Play-Offs

The White and Reds are yet to confirm their place at this summer’s 2026 World Cup in North America.

After finishing second behind the Netherlands in Group G in World Cup Qualifying, Poland earned a spot in the 2026 World Cup Qualifying Play-Offs.

With their defensive unit in form, Poland will be hoping that a clean sheet will be kept against the ever-dangerous Albania.

Kiwior and Bednarek will be crucial to a good defensive display, as manager Jan Urban will surely pick FC Porto’s Polish wall as the centre-back duo.

Poland’s chance of qualifying for another major tournament have gone down to the Play-Offs, but the Poles will know that their strong defensive pairing will help them a long way to qualifying for another major competition and earning their place at the 2026 World Cup.
