A Federico Valverde hat-trick almost surely shattered Manchester City’s dreams of winning the UEFA Champions League.
Los Blancos won the first leg of their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie at Santiago Bernabeu 3-0 on Wednesday, March 11, to wrest a huge advantage going into the second leg next week.
The Federico Valverde hat-trick has given City a huge mountain to climb at Etihad Stadium next week, as their chances of going through are very slim at the moment, but nothing is impossible.
Federico Valverde Hat-Trick Establishes Real Madrid’s Dominance In The UEFA Champions League
Real Madrid have won the UEFA Champions League title a record 15 times, and they will fancy their chances of doing it once more.
Alvaro Arbeloa’s side has not been in great form in La Liga recently, and even their qualification for the UEFA Champions League Round of 16 was not very smooth.
However, as the tournament starts moving towards its latter stages, Real seem to be coming into their own.
The Federico Valverde hat-trick was his first for the club, and it could not have come at a better time.
What is more important is that the Federico Valverde hat-trick came in the first half itself.
Even though Los Blancos were missing players like Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, among others, their victory must have been even more gratifying.
Valverde started in central midfield alongside Brahim Diaz and made his mark in the most emphatic way possible. The 27-year-old Uruguayan has now played in 363 matches for Los Blancos and scored 38 goals.
His versatility allows him to play in several positions, including his great stints at right-back. However, the Federico Valverde hat-trick showed his offensive abilities once again and underlined his importance even in a star-studded team.

Uphill Task For Manchester City In The Second Leg
The task for Manchester City is definitely not impossible, but highly unlikely. The Cityzens will go all out in the second leg, but winning a match by a margin of three or more goals against Real Madrid is always a difficult job.
It should not surprise us if the Cityzens opt to play with two strikers in Erling Haaland and Omar Marmoush in the second leg and go for goals from the get-go. However, if Real Madrid are able to score a goal at the Etihad, it will virtually kill the tie.
The Federico Valverde hat-trick on Wednesday has given Real Madrid a massive upper hand in the tie.
However, should they move into the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, they will likely find Bayern Munich waiting for them, which should prove to be another huge obstacle.
Still, as of now, Los Blancos should savour their wonderful win over one of the best teams in Europe.
As for Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City, a lot of soul-searching is required. They are in the race to win the Premier League, but their Champions League hopes this season seem to be all but over.
Valverde proving his status as one of the game’s best midfielders marked yet another unforgettable European night at Bernabeu. It should also give Real Madrid’s hopes of winning titles a great impetus.
