Urgent Fixes Manchester United Must Make for a Successful 2025/26 Season

Manchester United are in the midst of a pivotal summer transfer window after recording their worst-ever Premier League finish last season.

So far, the transfer window has been relatively quiet.

The signing of Matheus Cunha looks like smart business, and Bryan Mbeumo will add some much-needed energy and flair at the top of the pitch. But make no mistake, after last season’s disaster, the Red Devils need much more.

Here are three positions that should be a priority for Ruben Amorim over the next month.

A Proven Goalscorer To Lead Manchester United’s Line

United’s attack is already looking far better than last season’s toothless frontline.

Cunha arrives after scoring 15 goals and providing a further six for Wolves last term. He’s comfortable on the left but can also play centrally if Amorim chooses.

Meanwhile, Mbeumo joins after a stellar campaign, which saw him register the third-highest number of goal contributions last season. It appears the Cameroonian is a direct replacement for Alejandro Garnacho, whose days as a Manchester United player appear to be numbered.

The only problem the Red Devils may face is that both Cunha and Mbeumo were their teams’ focal points last season. At United, they won’t carry the same level of responsibility, and that will likely affect their output.

The club desperately needs a consistent striker, someone to score 15-20 goals a season. Neither Rasmus Hojlund nor Joshua Zirkzee have proven that they can be this player, combining for just seven league goals last season.

United have been linked with proven Premier League strikers including Ollie Watkins, Jean-Philippe Mateta, and Dominic Calvert-Lewin.

Consistency and Stability in the Midfield

Manchester United’s midfield remains relatively bleak, and they need to add some stability, particularly in the defensive end.

Casemiro is well past his prime, and his performances have been declining ever since he signed back in 2022.

While Manuel Ugarte and Kobbie Mainoo are promising options, a single injury could see a significant downgrade in quality in the middle of the park.

Whilst depth isn’t necessarily a must this season, since United won’t be playing in any European competition, another option in midfield would suffice for Ruben Amorim, especially after losing Christian Eriksen.

Targets could include Frankfurt’s Hugo Larsson and Valencia’s Javi Guerra, two young and energetic midfielders who could slot in seamlessly.

A Reliable Shot Stopper

Andre Onana has had three seasons to settle in, and it hasn’t gone well. The Cameroonian has made costly mistakes time and time again, directly contributing to United’s downfall in several competitions.

With Onana ruled out of Manchester United’s pre-season tour in the US due to a hamstring injury, this could be the perfect opportunity to sign a new number one.

Senne Lammens of Royal Antwerp has been recently linked with a move, and United’s hierarchy may need to act fast to bring in a more dependable presence between the sticks.

Ruben Amorim has an almighty task on his hands, and while the early signs are promising, the rebuild is far from complete.
