Man in Demand: Ajax’s Frenkie de Jong

Frenkie De Jong is the new name on everyone lips. After impressing Ajax fans last season and against World Champions France for the Netherlands, the midfielder is being banded around for a major move next summer to European giants. But is the 21-year-old ready for his big-money move?

Frenkie de Jong is a Man in Demand

Experience

Despite his name just starting to be banded around this summer, the midfielder has been around Ajax for a few years after moving there in 2015 from Willem II. Since his arrival to the Dutch giants, he has won the Jupiler League’s Talent of the Season in 2017. The 21-year-old was also part of the team that made it all the way to Europa League final in 2017.

Only recently has the Ajax midfielder been called up to the national squad. De Jong played twice in the Nations League and friendlies as he stole the headlines with his performance against France. It’s no doubt that de Jong could become something special but he still needs that vital experience, especially now Ajax are playing in the Champions League – he will have the opportunity to show his talent.

Age

The 21-year-old has become the latest wonderkid from Ajax to attract interest from major European clubs. De Jong has caught the eye of many around the world and is tipped to become the next big ‘star’.

His age is the reason for the apparent £75 million price tag. Over the last few years, we have seen the prices for highly rate teenagers explode, with Neymar starting all off. The likes of Kylian Mbappe went for £135 million along with the most recent as Real Madrid paid £40 million for 16-year-old Vinicius Jr. So the age of De Jong is keeping his value at a reasonable price and will definitely be in the price range for the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Frankie de Jong’s Decision

This is the hardest part for any young footballer with interest from the La Liga giants. Every player’s dream is to win major trophies and to do that you might need to find yourselves at the likes of Madrid, Barcelona or Manchester City.

However, Tottenham are also keen on securing the player’s signature. Last Summer, Spurs signed former Ajax defender Davinson Sanchez and have fellow ex-players. Along with that, Pochettino is known for bringing through young players and making them world class, with the likes of Dele Alli, Harry Kane, Eric Dier and Kieran Tripper all proving that. So with Tottenham’s growth over the last few seasons and the brand new stadium, de Jong might be persuaded to join the Premier League side. But if the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid come knocking, then it will be too hard to resist.

Overall Verdict

Frenkie de Jong has a bright future ahead of him but needs one more impressive season with Ajax, especially in the Champions League. Next Summer, the 21-year-old will get his move abroad where Tottenham might be best suitors but if Real Madrid or Barcelona are both on the table, then it will be too hard too turn down.
