Saturday Game Day Preview: 3 Key Matchups That Could Shake Up the Standings

Today’s games are the last slate until we head into the dog days of Summer of June and July. There are only a few weeks left until there is a break in the season, with the Club World Cup coming to the shores of America.

If a team wants to make the jump from a fringe contender to a top team in their conference, this is the day to jump-start a winning streak. With a special transfer window fastly approaching, teams will want to make a push to add more talent during the break.

We will discuss some teams that need a win to justify a playoff push and others who need a statement win to show the rest of the league they are not to be messed with.

Nashville SC Vs New York City FC

Both teams are in the current playoff picture, although the outlook on the season has been vastly different for the two teams.

NYCFC has underachieved this season and has had a lack of form, no matter who they face. They have their moments where they look to take a step up and compete, as soon as they make you believe they end up with a disappointing result, leaving fans speechless.

Nashville SC, on the other hand, has fans believing for the first time in three years that they are a contender for the Eastern Conference this season.

Nashville is just two points back from Cincinnati and second place, Columbus is tied in points with them, making this a tight race for who can take home the right to be top of the table.

All the pressure is on Nashville, they are expected to win in this matchup, making it all more important for NYCFC to get a positive result to turn their season around.

Inter Miami Vs Columbus Crew

The last time these teams faced off, it was in Cleveland as Inter Miami got the victory on the shores of a rainy Lake Erie.

Both teams have had a lack of performance recently. Miami had a positive result last week, as they will be looking to build on their win. Miami had a free fall down the table due to their poor results and lack of any defense whatsoever.

After Wednesday’s win, Miami hopes that Messi and Suarez can reignite their connection and lead Miami onto a winning streak before they prepare for the Club World Cup.

Columbus had an embarrassing loss to Charlotte last weekend and almost had a devastating result in the middle of the week against Nashville. The good news is they are tied in points with Nashville and can still obtain a top-two seed in the East with a win today.

A loss for Miami will be a bigger deal than it would be for Columbus due to the current standings. This could end up being a classic today if both teams can deliver a top-tier performance.

Toronto FC vs Charlotte FC

I know this matchup may not look that interesting due to Toronto being a bottom-tier team in the league. There may not be a lot to look at from their perspective, as their season would need a huge overhaul if they were to turn things around.

Charlotte is the team that stands out to me due to their being in such an interesting situation as a team.

They currently sit at the ninth seed after a great win against Columbus and a disappointing loss to the New York Red Bulls. A commanding win could show that Charlotte is separating itself from the bottom feeders at the bottom of the standings.

Charlotte is right on the ledge of being a playoff contender or a bottom team in the East. A win or loss could dictate how the rest of the season will go for the Queen City.
