£100m Gamble Fails as Jack Grealish Leaves Manchester City for Everton Loan

Jack Grealish is joining Everton on loan from Manchester City. With the Cityzens acquiring Omar Marmoush, Rayan Cherki and Tijjani Reijnders recently, there is not much room for the English midfielder in the squad.

Grealish was signed by Pep Guardiola for £100 million from Aston Villa in 2021 and has spent four seasons with the Cityzens. However, it would not be an overstatement to say that he has mostly failed to justify his price tag at Manchester City.

His performance in a less-than-satisfactory 2024/25 season was not special either.

Jack Grealish’s Man City Career

Grealish has won three Premier League titles and a UEFA Champions League with the Cityzens.

He is going to turn 30 next month, and his utility for the team has decreased with time.

Grealish has scored 17 goals and registered 23 assists in 157 matches for City. Just to compare, he scored 32 goals in 213 matches for Villa.

He has largely remained a non-starter at City and has primarily only been used as a substitute.

Age is not the only factor that is going against Grealish at Manchester City, however. Guardiola follows a more regimented style, which means that Grealish has had to retain possession more rigorously while playing for the club.

He has not had the freedom to break through opposition defences as often as he used to for Aston Villa. Teams are usually more tedious in their defending against the Cityzens, which means that the City forwards have less space in the final third.

As a result, Grealish has had to rely on passing football that City usually play.

New Signings Overshadowing Grealish

Jeremy Doku, who was signed after Grealish, has played in 84 matches in two seasons for Guardiola’s team.

Doku has scored 14 goals and registered 16 assists in almost half the matches Marmoush has played. The Belgian left-winger has emerged as the first-choice in his position for the Cityzens during the same period.

Guardiola now has Omar Marmoush in his squad as well, who is also capable of playing on the left flank. Marmoush has impressed during his brief stint at the club so far and will be preferred to Grealish as a left winger.

Moreover, there is not much scope for the Englishman in the central midfield either, as the Cityzens are stacked with central midfielders as well.

The signings of Cherki and Reijnders have virtually made Grealish redundant in the squad.

Not to mention that there are already players like Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan in the central midfield.

David Moyes Has Resurrected Everton

Moyes has done a good job at Everton. The Toffees finished 13th in the league table last season despite a 10-point deduction, without which they would have been inside the top half of the table.

Undoubtedly, Moyes will demand a good performance from Grealish. Grealish will also have a point to prove while playing for a lesser club. He is certain to get more game time at Everton than he has for the Cityzens in the recent past.

It remains to be seen how well he manages to fare at his new club.
