Gianluigi Donnarumma has recently completed a decade in his senior football career, having made his senior debut for AC Milan in 2015.
It is quite surprising to think that the Italian, who currently plays for Paris Saint-Germain, is still only 26.
Manchester United are reportedly chasing Donnarumma at the moment, with Andre Onana failing to justify his signing for the Red Devils. The Italian had a wonderful season in 2024/25, winning the treble with the Paris club.
Gianluigi Donnarumma Can Match the Stature of Past Manchester United Goalkeeping Greats
United have had great goalkeepers like Peter Schmeichel, Edwin Van der Sar, Fabian Barthez and David De Gea during the last three decades. Onana’s profile could not quite match those of his predecessors. His performance on the pitch did even worse.
Onana’s mistakes cost the Premier League side a great deal, though he was by no means the only man responsible for the club’s disastrous last season, in which they finished 15th in the Premier League table. Hence, signing a top goalkeeper like Donnarumma would be a great move for the Red Devils.
Donnarumma has played in more than 400 matches in his club career already. Aside from winning the treble with PSG last season, he also won the European Championships with the Italian national team in 2021.
He is very tall and uses his height to great effect in foiling the moves of the opposition. He is a good shot-stopper at the same time.
Aside from Real Madrid’s Thibaut Courtois and Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer, there is hardly any other goalkeeper in the world with as imposing a presence inside the box as Donnarumma. His presence should be reassuring enough to give United the sense of security they need.

When Does Donnarumma’s Contract With PSG End?
Donnarumma’s contract with PSG runs until June 2026. Hence, PSG will try to offload him to earn some money this summer itself.
Moreover, with the Parisians reportedly being after Lucas Chevalier of Lille, Donnarumma’s position in the starting XI next season might be jeopardised.
Chevalier is younger than Donnarumma and seems to be the next big thing among goalkeepers.
As a result, if Donnarumma takes the cue and decides to leave PSG, he might very well land at Old Trafford. However, as of now, Manchester City and Chelsea are also reportedly interested in getting his services.
At the moment, Liverpool and Arsenal have quality goalkeepers in the form of Alisson Becker and David Raya, respectively. The Cityzens may be looking to replace Ederson after the Brazilian’s long tenure at the club. Meanwhile, Chelsea’s Robert Sanchez is probably not the best custodian going around in the Premier League.
All of that means that United might face competition in signing Donnarumma from City and Chelsea. However, the attraction of playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world might draw the Italian to United.
Manchester United have to go through a rebuild under Ruben Amorim. It might very well begin with the position of the goalkeeper itself through the acquisition of Donnarumma this summer.
