Manchester United Look to Continue Their Fine Form in the Champions League

Manchester United didn’t have the best start to the season. With signings like Jadon Sancho and Cristiano Ronaldo, many people expected them to compete for the league title. That wasn’t the case. After humiliating defeats against Liverpool and Watford, the club decided to part ways with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Ralf Rangnick was appointed to guide the club through the remainder of the season and the Reds seem to have picked up form at a crucial time.

Premier League Success

Ralf Rangnick’s time in Manchester hasn’t been easy. However, over recent weeks the club has been playing much better and started picking up results. Ralf Rangnick’s side are currently 4th in the table and are strong candidates to end the season with a top four spot.

The Reds beat Leeds United 4-2 in their most recent game. Four different players were on the scoresheet for the Manchester club including youngster Anthony Elanga. However, Jadon Sancho was the player to receive the majority of the praise for his brilliant performance. The English forward made two assists and won the majority of his battles against Luke Ayling.

Can Manchester United Expand Their Winning Streak?

Manchester United will travel to Madrid for their Champions League clash with Atletico Madrid this week. Atletico Madrid will be a very different opponent to Leeds. They will sit back and allow Rangnick’s side to keep the majority of the ball. This heavily contrasts to Marcelo Bielsa’s play-style and Manchester United actually had less possession than Leeds in their 4-2 win.

That being said, a draw wouldn’t be a terrible result for Manchester United. UEFA have scrapped the away goal rule meaning Rangnick can afford to play defensively and take the tie to Old Trafford. You would expect Manchester United to push for a win despite these circumstances. Rangnick rested several big players such as Raphael Varane and Marcus Rashford over the weekend. You can expect these players to start and for Rangnick’s side to take the game to Atletico Madrid to gain an advantage before heading into the second leg.
