Marc Guehi to Liverpool? Reds Eye £40m Crystal Palace Defender

Liverpool are reportedly very close to securing the signing of Marc Guehi from Crystal Palace. The 25-year-old English centre-back is one of the most dependable players in his position in the Premier League and will undoubtedly be a valuable addition to the Reds’ squad.

Liverpool have played two matches this season and conceded four goals in total in them. This is not an ideal piece of statistics for the English champions. They have bolstered their attack by signing Florian Wirtz and Hugo Ekitike this summer, but their defence probably needs further reinforcement.

Marc Guehi Will Be a Great Addition to Liverpool’s Squad

Guehi has played in 157 matches for Crystal Palace so far. Over the past year or two, he has emerged as one of the finest defenders in England and has also performed creditably for the Three Lions in international football.

Quite naturally, he has attracted attention from some of the top clubs in England. At 25, he has probably just entered his prime as a footballer. Hence, if a club is able to offer him a five-year deal or thereabouts, it would be really beneficial for them.

Winning the FA Cup for Palace last season and then beating Liverpool in the Community Shield match a couple of weeks ago have definitely improved Guehi’s profile as a footballer. He has been on Liverpool’s radar for quite some time now, and it remains to be seen whether he manages to secure a move to Anfield.

Liverpool Are in Need of a Central Defender

Virgil van Dijk is there for the Reds with his towering presence both literally and figuratively. However, he is approaching 34 and is no longer a long-term option for the Reds.

Jarell Quansah has left the club, and Ibrahima Konate can be error-prone, as he showed in his not-so-impressive display in the 4-2 win over AFC Bournemouth.

Joe Gomez, another option for the Reds in central defence, is injury-prone and has played in only 242 matches in his 10 seasons for the club. In such a scenario, having another top-class centre-back beside Van Dijk is something that the Reds cannot do without.

However, they are going to face competition from Tottenham Hotspur in this regard. Spurs are also chasing Guehi at the moment, as Cristian Romero is injury-prone.

Tottenham will also play in the UEFA Champions League this season, having won the Europa League last season. Therefore, they should offer an attractive prospect to Guehi as well.

Now, it is for the Englishman to decide and convince his current club to part with him. As per reports, Liverpool might be able to get Guehi for a price as low as £35 to £40 million, which should be considered a bargain.

The Reds have had a few fantastic signings in the recent past. The likes of Mohamed Salah, Van Dijk, Roberto Firmino, Alisson Becker and Sadio Mane have all enriched the club with their presence during the past decade.

Guehi could very well be an addition to that elusive list of footballers at the club.
