Everton are set to give Rafael Benítez time to turn things around but crisis is looking at Goodison Park as Marcel Brands leaves Everton.
Marcel Brands Leaves Everton Due to “Clear Difference in Direction and Vision”
Brands’ Departure Confirmed Before Arsenal Game
Everton’s Director of Football Marcel Brands has left the club with immediate effect. The Dutchman, previously employed by PSV Eindhoven, had been in the role since May 2018.
On his departure, Brands told supporters: “On Friday, following a personal conversation with the Chairman and my fellow Board members, we agreed that I would step down from my post as Director of Football and as a member of the Everton Football Club Board.”
“The Board and I agreed that there is a clear difference in the vision and direction for this beautiful club and, with that in mind, the decision was taken.”
“I want to thank everyone in the Club who I have worked closely with over the last three and a half years. There are a lot of talented people at Everton with huge passion and commitment to move the Club forward, both on and off the pitch.”
Marcel Brands foresaw Everton’s transfer business. He worked with managers Marco Silva, Carlo Ancelotti and latterly Benítez.
Is Benítez Safe?
Following an excellent start to the campaign, Everton have failed to win since September 25th. Defeats to Watford, Wolves and Brentford were below par. Plus, a 4-1 thrashing against Liverpool at Goodison Park left a sour taste in the mouths of the fans.
Despite the poor results, an official Everton statement on Monday December 6th said:
“A strategic review of the football structure will now take place which will inform the best model for the club to proceed with in the long term.”
“In the meantime, the owner and board of directors will continue to provide our manager, Rafa Benitez, with their full support.”
Marcel Brands Leaves Everton Having Failed Despite Heavy Spending
Everton’s excessive spending in recent years showed Everton fans that the club were aiming high. However, results on the pitch have not matched those expectations.
Half of Everton’s top 10 most costly signings came during Brands’ time at the club. These moves include Richarlison, Alex Iwobi, Yerry Mina and Moise Kean.
Despite this, Everton have failed to progress towards the European spots in the Premier League. The club are currently in 16th, just five points off relegation. They are the only team to have failed to win any of their last five at the time of writing.
Injury problems
Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s injury problems this season have played a huge part in Everton’s downfall. The bargain signings of Demarai Gray and Andros Townsend looked smart earlier in the season. However, the English wide men’s form has dipped in recent times.
With Brands out of the door and Benítez said to be safe, the future remains uncertain at Goodison Park.
