MLS vs. Europe: How the League Aims to Hold Its Audience During the Season Overlap

The MLS owns the summer with its former European stars taking the main stage as the biggest and most popular leagues across the world go on break for the Summer. Yes, there are a few major world tournaments that happen almost every summer, especially now with the Club World Cup being a larger spectacle.

Once August hits and the larger European leagues return, it sends the MLS to the back burner. This isn’t just a problem with losing international fans, but supporters in America as well.

The Premier League is the most-watched league in America despite fans not being able to attend games without traveling across the pond.

The MLS has a way to keep fans interested as they only have seven games until they reach the MLS Cup playoffs, which remain the most exciting competition in the MLS.

The Leagues Cup

The Leagues Cup is a competition between the MLS and Liga MX to find out which club is the best of the best.

The MLS won the first two years and has a golden chance to do it again. Though this competition may not be recognized globally quite yet it has been fun to watch as both leagues want to win the League Cup.

With a possibility of four teams for the MLS filling up the semi-final (Seattle, Orlando, and LA Galaxy were playing during the time this was written), it is a perfect time to tune in to see what could happen.

The MLS has struggled against Liga MX, as they have a difficult time winning against them in the CONCACAF Champions Cup.

The Leagues Cup is a great display of the very best of what the MLS has to offer after the transfer window, when teams are at their top talent-wise.

It may not create long-term fans, but it gets people watching in the middle of the week while other leagues are off.

The MLS Cup

The MLS has a conclusion like no other league in the world, as it has an American flair to its playoff system.

The MLS regular season is pointless for most teams, unless you are are contender for the Supporters’ shield or fighting for the play-in spot. Last year’s playoffs saw the top two seeds in the East go down to the underdog, while a bottom seed went to the Finals.

The playoffs are about who can get hot at the right time and carry that momentum throughout the competition. The favorites can lose in any round, while the underdogs seem to be in every single way.

Rather than ending with an eight-point lead of the top spot and playing meaningless games towards the end of the season, the MLS rewards teams that stay competitive with a chance to bring home the league’s most important title.

The biggest problem about the MLS Cup is the fact that there is a huge break in the middle of it, thanks to an international break they cannot avoid.

If this year’s edition of the MLS Cup is any good as last year’s, we will be in for a treat.
