Piotr Zielinski’s thunderous effort guided Poland past Albania in the 2026 World Cup Play-Off semi-final, to set up a clash against Sweden for a place at this summer’s tournament in North America.
The Poland vs Albania clash started as a nervy clash, but opened up as the minutes ticked on, with the visitors taking the lead in the first half.
However, Poland’s experienced duo, Robert Lewandowski and Piotr Zielinski, managed to find the net for the White and Reds to guide them to victory.
Piotr Zielinski’s thunderous effort, which earned the hosts a well-earned victory, was a trademark midfielder’s finish, as he took a touch out of his feet before unleashing a vicious shot into the bottom corner.
Poland will now face Sweden, who beat Ukraine 3-1 in the other semi-final, for a place at this summer’s 2026 World Cup.
Piotr Zielinski’s Thunderous Effort Sends Poland To 2026 World Cup Play-Off Finals: As It Happened
The first five minutes of the encounter were nervy, but Poland looked to make the home advantage count.
The White and Reds had the first shots of the game as Jan Urban’s side looked to pile on the pressure; however, Albania’s defence stood firm and was up to the task of shutting them out.
Poland’s attacks looked to use their sustained possessions to penetrate the Albanian backline, whilst the visitors looked to utilise the counterattack.
Both sides continued to look for ways to get in behind the opposition defence, but both backlines kept tight as the clock hit 30 minutes.
The hosts’ first real chances to drive into open space saw Filip Rozga unleash a tame effort from outside the box that trickled wide of the target.
Albania’s first shooting opportunity came minutes later as Qazim Laci also hit a long-range effort, but his shot was high and wide of Kamil Grabara’s goal.
In the 42nd minute, an awful mistake from Jan Bednarek saw Arber Hoxha latch onto the ball, round the on-rushing Grabara and slot into an empty net.
Poland looked to respond straight away as Matty Cash’s knockdown found Sebastian Szymanski, but his effort was off target.
In a rapid counterattack in the second half, Nedim Bajrami looked to double the lead for Albania, but his shot was woeful and miles off target in a golden chance for the visitors.
Poland looked to up the tempo in attack as substitute Oskar Pietuszewski started making a huge impact. The youngster’s pass found Jakub Kaminski, but his shot from an acute angle failed to hit the target.
Just after the hour mark, Lewandowski equalised for Poland. After his initial shot was blocked, the Polish captain won a corner. Szymanski’s beautiful in-swinger found Poland’s number nine at the back stick as he nodded the ball home to level the game.
The hosts continued their surge as Piotr Zielinski had two efforts at goal, but the Albanian defence and Thomas Strakosha were able to keep the shots out.
Stavros Pilios had another golden opportunity for Albania to put the visitors back in front, but a fantastic save from Grabara denied him.
Moments later, Poland took the lead after a thunderous strike from Zielinski. Szymanski laid the ball off to the Inter Milan midfielder, who sent a rocket into the bottom corner to put the hosts 2-1 up.

Poland’s Determination Shines Through As The 2026 World Cup Is A Step Closer
The White and Reds may have gone 1-0 down following a mistake from Bednarek, but they stuck to their task and dug deep to get a favourable result.
The backline of FC Porto duo Bednarek and Jakub Kiwior, alongside Tomasz Kedziora, was a back three full of experience.
However, Bednarek’s poor first touch saw Albania get the breakthrough as Grabara was rounded by Hoxha, who slotted into an empty net.
Even when they went 1-0 down, Poland did not stop playing their game and were consistently threatening Starkosha’s goal.
What Jan Urban is looking to achieve is getting the right balance between experience and youthfulness, as the likes of Filip Rozga, Jakub Kaminski, and then substitute and wonderkid Oskar Pietuszewski were able to deliver that.
Their constant runs at the Albanian defence showcased the unlimited potential that the three forwards possess, as their determination drove Poland on to a great victory.
Piotr Zielinski’s thunderous effort wrote many of the headlines on Thursday evening, but Sebastian Szymanski’s performance embodied the Polish spirit.
The Stade Rennais midfielder not only contributed in attack with two assists, but also his tracking back and tireless defensive work made him one of the standout performers alongside the two goal scorers that earned Poland a vital place in the 2026 World Cup Play-Offs Final.
Albania’s Resolute Defending Goes To Nothing As Wait For World Cup Appearance Goes On
Sylvinho’s men had so many chances to put Poland to the sword inside the first and second halves, but luck was simply not on their side.
After Hoxha’s well-taken goal just before half-time, Albania looked to go defensive and sit back and contain the Polish attacks.
Their back four turned into a back 10 in the second half, with the visitors utilising the counterattack, but failing to convert their chances to extend their advantage.
As the game wore on, Poland’s attacking exploits were getting more frequent, and the alarm bells were ringing louder for Albania.
After the hour mark, Poland equalised, and then, Albania’s mentality flipped, but it was too late as the wind was in the White and Reds’ sails.
Another World Cup and Albania have once again failed to qualify; however, it is the closest they have been to making the huge leap onto the international stage for a long time.
With the European Championships in two years and the UEFA Nations League to contend with, Albania can look forward to trying to qualify for the Euros after narrowly missing out on the 2026 World Cup.
Poland vs Sweden For A Place At The 2026 World Cup
After Piotr Zielinski’s thunderous effort sent Poland to the 2026 World Cup Play-Offs Final, they will face a familiar foe in the make-or-break match for a place at this summer’s tournament.
In the other semi-final, Sweden cruised past Ukraine, with a Viktor Gyokeres hat-trick securing a 3-1 win.
The two sides faced each other only four years ago at the same stage, as both were looking to claim their spot at the 2024 World Cup in Qatar.
Utilising the home advantage, Poland ran out 2-0 winners, with Lewandowski and Zielinski on the scoresheet, as they look to replicate their exploits of four years ago once more for the Poles.
