The Premier League is one of the most competitive football leagues in the world. Many world-class teams battle for first place, hoping to make history by joining the seven teams which have previously taken the number one spot.
Although almost all teams that compete are some of the best in the world, here are the five teams which have historically stood out above the rest.
#5 – Liverpool
Despite playing in every season of the Premier League, and always coming in the top 10, Liverpool is the only club on this list to have not won more than one time.
The 2019-2020 season saw the end of a nearly 30-year wait for Liverpool, as they secured first place, becoming the only team other than Manchester City to have won in the last six years.
Although they have always been remarkably consistent in both their play and their rankings, the team has seen a resurgence in their ability in recent years, as Jürgen Klopp became their manager in late 2015.
This season, it looks as though they are very much real contenders for first place once again.
#4 – Arsenal
Arsenal’s 2003-2004 season remains one of the most iconic feats in Premier League history. They ended the season with 26 wins and 12 draws, going undefeated – a feat which has yet to be replicated.
Arsenal has three Premier League victories under their belt. And while recent years have not seen Arsenal reach the same heights, they remain top contenders, having placed in the top ten every year since the 94 – 95 season.
The historical significance of their achievement remains undeniable, and that is unlikely to change any time soon.
#3 – Chelsea
Chelsea’s rise to prominence in the Premier League began in 2003 when Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich took over as the club’s owner.
This marked the beginning of a new era, transforming Chelsea into a title contender. Under the guidance of their new manager José Mourinho, the Blues took home the title for the first time in the 2004-2005 season.
Chelsea has gone on to win the title an additional four times.
Due to what many spectators are blaming on bad management, Chelsea has been struggling in both the 2022-2023 season, as well as in 2023-2024. Fans of the club are hopeful that something can be changed to bring them back to their former glory.
#2 – Manchester City
In the current era of the Premier League, it is easy to see how much of a powerhouse Manchester City is.
Having won five of the last six titles, and coming in the top five every year since their turnaround in the 2008-2009 season, City has seemed unstoppable in recent years.
The club has multiple note-worthy players, including Phil Foden, Bernardo Silva, and their star striker Erling Haaland, who scored the most goals (36) in a single Premier League season.
It will be interesting to see how long they can keep up their current streak of dominance.
#1 – Manchester United
A list of the top teams in the Premier League would be incomplete without mentioning Manchester United.
Having won a staggering 13 times, the Red Devils’ record is unlike any other team. From the inception of the League in 1992, United came in the top three every single year until the 2013-2014 season.
Manchester United has had a roster unlike any other, with infamous players such as Wayne Rooney, George Best, and David Beckham playing for the club.
Although they have not secured first place in over a decade now, they continue to remain top contenders every year, and their legacy in the League is unmatched.
