Premier League Mid-Season Analysis: Is There Only One Possible Winner?

The 2024-25 Premier League season is officially halfway through, with most teams having played 19 matches already.

However, Liverpool, the team which is leading the league table with 46 points, have played a match less.

At this point in time, the Reds are the odds-on favourite to win the league title. They lead second-placed Arsenal by six points with a match in hand.

Unless there is a dramatic fall in their form, Liverpool should be cruising to their 20th league title in four months’ time.

Liverpool Have Been in Great Form This Premier League season

Liverpool have won 14 matches this season in the Premier League already, which is three more than Arsenal’s tally. Arne Slot’s men have scored eight goals more than Mikel Arteta’s.

However, the Gunners have conceded the least number of goals – 18 – so far this season, whilst the Reds are joint second with Nottingham Forest for the least goals conceded – 19.

Judging by every parameter though, Liverpool have been the team of the season so far.

Ryan Gravenberch has been a revelation for them in the midfield and both Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk seems to have rolled back the years to be at their brilliant best.

Moreover, players like Curtis Jones, Dominik Szoboszlai and Cody Gakpo have improved their performance by a few notches this season. In all competitions, Gakpo has scored 12 goals this season already, which is second only to Salah’s tally of 21 among the Liverpool players.

Liverpool’s plethora of options upfront have allowed them to shuffle their forwards regularly. With brilliant passers like Trent Alexander-Arnold and Alexis Mac Allister there in the team, the forwards are almost never devoid of passes played to them.

Diogo Jota, Gakpo and Luis Díaz also provide a nice balance for Slot’s team by attacking through the inside-left channel often, thereby balancing Salah’s efforts through the inside-right one.

Unless teams start playing as negatively against them as they have been doing against Manchester City for the last few seasons, the Reds’ juggernaut probably cannot be stopped in the current season at least.

Transfer Issues Troubling Liverpool to an Extent

Three Liverpool players: Salah, van Dijk and Alexander-Arnold, will see their contracts expire this year. Alexander-Arnold has been strongly linked to a move to Real Madrid, as the Spanish giants seem to be seriously interested in him.

Losing the right-back to Real Madrid in January is the last thing Liverpool will want. It might jeopardize their chances of winning the league title slightly. They might still win the league title without the services of Alexander-Arnold, but psychologically speaking, it might be a setback for them.

However, Slot will hope that he will be able to keep Alexander-Arnold till summer at least. The focus should not be lost anywhere else other than on winning the league title, however.

Even winning the UEFA Champions League is not beyond Liverpool’s ability, as they have looked like the best team in the competition this season.

The Reds have lost only a solitary match across all competitions this season, which is a phenomenal record. If they are able to even go close to maintaining that kind of form in the second half of the season, they will finish it with one or more titles.
