Amid the continued struggle of his former club, Manchester United, Scott McTominay, the 28-year-old Scottish midfielder, continues to shine for his new club, Napoli.
McTominay scored a brace in Napoli’s 3-0 win over Empoli in a Serie A match recently. Had one of his shots not hit the woodwork, McTominay could have finished the match with a hat-trick.
Napoli now have 68 points in 32 matches, which is three less than the tally of the table-toppers, Inter Milan. The Serie A is thus poised for a thrilling finish, with six rounds of matches to go.
More Attacking Freedom for Scott McTominay at Napoli
McTominay now has nine goals in 30 matches for the Italian club. His tally of goals for Napoli is more than all but two players of his former club this season.
Only Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho have found the net on more occasions than McTominay has for Napoli this season.
Quite understandably, Manchester United find themselves languishing in the 14th position in the Premier League table.
McTominay spent nine seasons at Old Trafford and found the net 29 times in 255 matches for the Red Devils. However, McTominay was more of a defensive player for Manchester United, primarily playing in the double-pivot in the club’s 4-2-3-1 formation.
In Napoli, McTominay has been playing as an attacking midfielder, regularly making forays into the opposition penalty box.
His positioning reminds one of someone like Frank Lampard in his heyday at Chelsea.
As a result, McTominay has often found himself on the scoring sheet and has contributed significantly towards Napoli’s surge to the top of the table.
It remains to be seen whether the club is able to win its fourth Serie A title this time around.

The Title Fight
Inter are not only in contention to win the Serie A title, but the UEFA Champions League title as well, having a 2-1 advantage over Bayern Munich after the first leg of their quarterfinal tie.
Beating Bayern should make them one of the favourites to win the European crown.
However, playing in the Champions League should make Inter Milan somewhat distracted from their campaign in Serie A.
Hence, the opportunity is there for Napoli to go for the domestic title. McTominay may continue to be one of their key players in this regard.
Winning the Serie A title should be a fantastic achievement for the Scottish midfielder, especially given the plight his former club is in at the moment.
Can McTominay make it a season to remember for himself?
