Summer Interest
Several clubs showed their interest in the 28-year-old during the summer, including West Ham. Jesse Lingard enjoyed a successful loan run with The Hammers when he joined them in the January transfer window. He scored 9 goals and made 4 assists for West Ham in just 16 games and led West Ham to a 6th place finish. Moyes’ side are now enjoying a good spell in the Europa League sitting top of their group and are also having an incredible Premier League campaign with their most recent win coming against Liverpool.
Current Season
Lingard has only started 1 game this season for Manchester United which was their defeat to his former club, West Ham United, in the EFL Cup back in September. He has also appeared off the bench on 7 occasions for Manchester United but that only adds up to 76 minutes of game-time, not even a full game.
Lingard believed that the manager, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, would give him more of a chance to prove himself after his impressive run under David Moyes. This hasn’t been the case and he has been left on the bench alongside the likes of Van de Beek. Many fans have been left confused by these decisions, especially since the midfield partnership of Fred and McTominay hasn’t proved to be reliable.
What’s Next For Lingard?
United have a very busy fixture schedule coming up and will face Watford in the Premier League on Saturday, followed by a crucial Champions League fixture against Villarreal on Tuesday. They’ll then go on to face Tuchel’s Chelsea next Sunday. There are many big games coming up and it would make sense to see Lingard start at least one of these games.
However, this is very unlikely based on Ole’s recent line-ups and it’s likely Lingard will be looking for a move this January transfer window, whether it be a loan or a permanent transfer. Lingard has been at Manchester United since the age of seven but it appears his time at the club may be coming to an end.
