Should Manchester United Go for Joshua Kimmich This Summer?

Manchester United are in desperate need of players who can strengthen their squad, come the 2025 summer transfer window.

Bayern Munich player Joshua Kimmich will see his contract expire at the end of the season, and will become a free agent then.

A number of top European clubs should go for the 30-year-old German holding midfielder, who can also play as a right-back. Bayern Munich are reportedly not interested in renewing his contract.

Kimmich has won eight Bundesliga titles and a UEFA Champions League in his decade-long stay at Bayern. At 30, he does not have too many years left in top-flight football, however.

Should Manchester United Go for Joshua Kimmich?

Manchester United have a promising holding midfielder in the form of Kobbie Mainoo already.

Another player in that position, Manuel Ugarte, has done a good job in his debut season for the Red Devils.

In such a scenario, signing another player for that position seems like a luxury for Manchester United. However, having Kimmich in the team will provide it with a wealth of experience.

United do not have many top-class players in their squad at the moment. Therefore, Kimmich could turn out to be a good addition in that regard for the next few years at least.

Moreover, the German’s versatility means that he can play as right-back as well.

United already have Diogo Dalot in that position, but Kimmich will definitely be an upgrade on the Portuguese. Kimmich is a better crosser of the ball than Dalot and also a better player defensively.

Not too many Champions League winners have played for the Red Devils in the recent past.

Having the German will therefore provide them with some winning mentality, which they can definitely do with at the moment.

What Kimmich’s Signing Means for the Club’s Youngsters

Having Kimmich in the side will definitely reduce the game time for Ugarte, Mainoo and Toby Collyer, each of whom will be in their early twenties by the start of next season.

Should Kimmich actually make the switch to the Red Devils, it will be a call that Ruben Amorim will have to take.

Signing Kimmich has its share of pros and cons. Even if the contract materialises, it should not be more than a three-year one

United have already been regretting signing Casemiro from Real Madrid three seasons ago, as the Brazilian faded and started showing signs of aging after a very good first season.

As a result, the Manchester United management might be apprehensive of signing another player on the wrong side of 30.

They did the same with Bastian Schweinsteiger, another German who came from Bayern to have a forgettable stint at Old Trafford.

The job for the Blazers and INEOS will be to thoroughly weigh the pros and cons before arriving at a decision. Kimmich’s versatility and tough temperament might sway the decision in his favor.

Should the deal materialize, it might end up helping United in the next few years. The club might have to contend with Arsenal in ensuring the German’s signature.

The club supporters will have their fingers crossed in this regard. In the past few years, they have seen a lot of high-profile signings that have flattered to deceive.

Therefore, they cannot afford to be over-optimistic. However, Kimmich might turn out to be an exception as well.

It remains to be seen how things pan out for them.
