Borussia Dortmund: German Precision at the Club World Cup
Dortmund punched their ticket through UEFA coefficient standings.
Their group opener was a 0-0 draw with Fluminense on June 17, with neither side able to find the net.
The real fireworks came in Cincinnati six days later. Facing Mamelodi Sundowns under scorching temperatures, Dortmund emerged 4-3 winners in a seesaw clash.
Goals from Felix Nmecha, Serhou Guirassy, Jobe Bellingham, and an own goal from Sundowns’ Khuliso Mudau gave them the edge, but Sundowns fought back late – only to fall short in a heart-stopping finish.
Final matchday pitched Dortmund against Ulsan Hyundai where Daniel Svensson converted a precise Jobe Bellingham assist in the 36th minute.
That lone goal secured a 1-0 win, clinching the top spot and passage to the Round of 16 where they will face Monterrey.
Fluminense: Samba Flair & Second Place
Fluminense qualified as 2023 Copa Libertadores champions, and they carried that flair across the Atlantic.
Their journey began with a goalless stalemate against Dortmund.
On June 21 in Atlanta, they bounced back emphatically with a 4-2 win over Ulsan Hyundai, sealing a crucial victory.
That win moved them to four points, setting up a showdown with Mamelodi Sundowns.
They closed out with a 0-0 draw against Mamelodi Sundowns – enough to grab second spot with five points, behind Dortmund.
They’ll be dangerous opponents in the knockout round, taking on Inter Milan at the RO16.

Mamelodi Sundowns qualified for the Club World Cup via the CAF rankings.
They kicked things off with a statement: a 1-0 win over Ulsan Hyundai in Orlando on June 17, courtesy of Iqraam Rayners.
It was the first African win in this US edition of the tournament.
But things got chaotic in their next match. That 4-3 loss to Dortmund showcased attacking strength but also defensive cracks under heat stress.
Sundowns ended with a 0-0 draw against Fluminense, finishing third on four points.
Their campaign started bright but fizzled under pressure.
Ulsan Hyundai: AFC Found Out
Ulsan were the only Asian team that earned their place via coefficient standings. But the step up proved harsh.
They suffered a 1-0 loss to Sundowns to start. Next came a 4-2 defeat to Fluminense, where they took the lead but dropped away as the Brazilian attack overwhelmed them.
Finally, their showdown with Mamelodi Sundowns ended 1-0 in Cincinnati. It was a valiant performance, but still a loss.
They finished bottom of the group with zero points.
