Premier League Player Prices: Are They Getting Out of Hand?

Throughout this summer, teams up and down the Premier League have spent astronomical amounts of money on different players.

On the other hand, they have also made similar levels of money from sales, which some might argue is too much.

But which players are commanding prices higher than may be deemed suitable?

Expensive Premier League Players

The astronomical prices for some players in the Premier League are best represented by two transfers that are currently going through and one that has been confirmed.

The transfer that has been confirmed relates to the buy-option for Evan Ferguson’s move to Roma, as well as transfers that are currently going through, including Dango Ouattara to Brentford and Omari Hutchinson to Nottingham Forest.

It has been confirmed by multiple sources, including the BBC, that the buy option included in Evan Ferguson’s loan move to Roma is €40 million.

While there is some talent there, the player’s best goalscoring season in the Premier League totals six goals, and many will be aware of how much the Irishman struggled on loan at West Ham last season. Therefore, this leads us to question the expense of this deal.

Ferguson is still only 20 and therefore has significant time and room for growth in his career. However, he has recently looked devoid of confidence.

Furthermore, for a prestigious club like Roma, they should be able to attract a more proven goalscorer to lead their attack.

Confirmed by sources including David Ornstein, Burkina Faso forward Dango Ouattara appears to be unhappy at Bournemouth, which has therefore led to a deal being agreed with Brentford for the player. This is a deal that many Bournemouth fans have expressed shock at, indicating surprise at the extent of the fee involved.

The deal appears to be a package deal with an upfront fee of £37 million with £5 million in add-ons. Dango has been proven to be a good Premier League winger, scoring seven and assisting four last season.

For such a fee, though, people may expect an increased return in that category, especially because the player deputised upfront for the Cherries for a period last season, and three of his goals came in one match against Nottingham Forest.

Nottingham Forest have finally agreed a deal for Omari Hutchinson, signing the player from Ipswich for a fee of around £37.5 million. Hutchinson, again, is a player who displays a good level of talent.

However, Ipswich signed the player for an upfront fee of £18 million last summer, and he has contributed with three goals and two assists last season, which many will feel is not enough to warrant that level of profit from the deal.

Hutchinson was one of the bright sparks in a season whereby Ipswich struggled, and he did overperform on his XG by 0.15 goals. However, last season constituted the player’s first full Premier League season, suggesting that the package offered by Nottingham Forest may have been too expensive.

The Cost of Premier League Talent

It is notable how much Premier League prices have increased over the years and how much they may continue to increase, leading to reflections about what players now offer in comparison to their price tag.

Nowadays, for a good standard Premier League player, it appears clubs should expect to pay a standard fee of around £25 million, with fees heightened when dealing with younger players with potential.

Such price increases are what have led clubs like Brighton and Bournemouth to sign talent from lesser-known leagues, as they attract a smaller fee and a good level of potential, should they adapt well to the Premier League.

However, there should still be a mix of lesser-known talents with Premier League experience, and many will be intrigued to see what it costs to pay for that Premier League experience in years to come.
